Hanger Tails(Tales) ~ Flying/Aviation

having owned a couple and flown them, these likely weren't your off the shelf store-bought "drones". The "toy" version have limited range and carry capacity, and struggle in the slightest wind.
Still - FWIW;

The Night A Mysterious Drone Swarm Descended On Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant

The mysterious case of mass drone incursions over America’s most powerful nuclear power plant that only resulted in more questions and no changes.

The reason for controlled flight into terrain is that some pilots have more confidence than brains, and this pilot is one of them. Somehow he survived unscathed, but who knows what the future holds.

DANG!
I was hoping to make this, especially since it's only about a dozen miles away, but prior commitment has me tied up.
Hopefully I'll get some glimpses as they fly over and about the general area.

That kid is lucky as hell. He literally fell into a split s and cleared the ground by about 6 inches.

About two weeks from now will be down to southern Oregon to visit a couple of the Wife's sisters. I'll also get away Saturday to take in this;

Most of these have been restored to flying condition. Some rare warbirds among them.

Thank thing is a beast! I saw it a few years ago at Oshkosh.

Fantastic!
Nice rush!

The Monday afterwards is when many of the aircraft that were at Abbotsford Air Show this weekend fly out to home or next destination.

Just a few moments ago while out in my backyard, had a P-40 Kittyhawk and an F6F Hellcat fly over. About 1,000' or plus AOG. Literally overhead. There's low overcast today and they were on a SW heading out of the airport.

Likely some of the Erickson Collection that was there.

One serendipity of our home~location is being under various flight paths in this region.

Have heard a few others today, but not always in position to get a view.

The Kittyhawk was flying lead with the Hellcat wingman at about 100' distance.

It was great!
Wish there had been a bit more flying, but the stunt performances were fantastic.
Weather was decent, not hot but comfortable. High cloud backdrop which began to breakup towards end of performances.
Was only there for the Saturday show, but got money's worth out of it.

We also fit in visits to a couple of my wife's sisters while down in that part of Oregon.

While down in Oregon to see the airshow in nearby Madras, we happened to be staying in Prineville at wife's sister's place.
Wish I'd know about this while we were there;

This is a fascinating design and concept. I really think it needs to be revived.

Designed to lift heavy loads in and out of nearly anywhere, the LTA 20-1 airship was exotic in pretty much every way.

Finishing up a book on them, so here's another interesting chapter in aviation history;
The Red Tails - Tuskegee Airmen

The Wiki page, it's rather long and I'll read it later to see how it compares with other material I've read about them.;

So 80+ years ago, scores of young American males of "African" ancestry chose to offer themselves in defense of the nation of their birth and ancestry.

It was an enticing opportunity since it included the chance to learn to fly the current technology of aircraft and serve as officers in service to the nation of their citizenship.

It was a departure from the decades+ culture of segregation and exclusion then prevalent, a step away from the past. An opportunity to apply equality of opportunity plus chance to support one's nation in the greater Global War and Effort for Liberty and Equality.

Scores to dozens flocked to apply, and among the few dozen chosen would arise the unique and elite organization to be known as the "Tuskegee Airman". A USAAF fighter group composed of primarily Black pilots trained to be combat proficient against the German Luftwaffe in the air battles over Europe.

World War Two was a global conflict that would see the USA arise as a major world power influencing the course war and it's post-conflict structure~organization.

A number of factors would influence their effectiveness and proficiency, but their main source would be an 'esprit de corp' beyond the racial/ethnic composition of their group and the cultural bias and prejudice they came from. By war's end they would prove to be one of the most effective USAAF fighter groups in the ETO, and set a record seldom equaled.

Early in the war, during their training, they started with the inspirational motto: "Rise Above".
In the course of training they would add the following epitaphs;

Aim High
Expect to Win
Never Quit
Use your Brain
Believe in Yourself
Be Ready to Go

All would be concepts essential to any fighter pilot combat group, and adopted in one or other similar forms.

Despite an origin from racial prejudice, bias, and obstruction; the men of the 332nd Fighter Group proved that race and ethnic origin was not a factor detracting from equality for opportunity or performance(results). Many would go on post WWII to have brilliant careers in military and combat aviation, as well as similar civilian pursuits.

Just found out, last minute, that Commemorative Air Force (CAF) B-29 is in Seattle this weekend.
Text and photos from my brother who lives just south of Seattle and caught it flying overhead of his home.
Our father worked on building these during World War II when he was rejected for physical reasons from the Navy.
Looks like I'll be doing a quick trip down that way to see it.

15th post
The Miramar air Show was this weekend. I went Friday. Damn good show. Speaking of B-29's, this one (Doc) was there on static display. It had just flown in from Utah.

It costs $10K an hour to fly this old bird. I like how they lined up all the props. 👍

Not many WWII planes in the show any more. The heritage flight was an F-22 Raptor and a P-51A. That's the older Mustang with an Allison engine....Interesting!
