Gun Background Checks Pass in Washington

I guess we shouldn't pass any laws because people will break the law.

No Dana, it is actually very simple....if you use a gun to commit a crime...we catch you and send you to prison. Everything else is pointless because criminals will not "pre" restrain themselves the way law abiding citizens do....if you pass a background check law like this...law abiding citizens will submit to background checks....criminals won't...they will steal their guns....then you catch them and put them in prison.

Felons are not allowed to have guns....when you catch a felon with a gun send them to prison.

Felons are not allowed to sell, or buy guns....if you catch a felon who has sold or bought a gun send them to prison.

That is what laws are for...not Tom Cruise "Pre-crime"....

That's racist.

They go to states with weaker laws.

Brain...where do British criminals get their guns....because they do have them...where do they get the grenades they use...and they have used them....?

Brain, where do Australian "Bikey" gangs and immigrants get their guns...because they are the ones committing gun crimes in Australia....?

Both countries have laws against guns...but the criminals who want them still get them...only the law abiding, honest citizens can't have guns...

This is like trying to teach math to a dog....but the dog actually kind of gets the concept...these people don't....

So they go to a private seller instead. No background check.

Brain....it is against the law for anyone.......anyone to sell guns to felons......to repeat.....it is against the law to sell guns to felons...anyone....

Brain....it is against the law for a felon to buy a gun from anyone.....to repeat....it is against the law for a felon to buy a gun from anyone......

How do you stop a felon from buying a gun from someone if he or the seller doesn't care about the law?

This is the truth about background checks...they do nothing to stop crime or mass killers...

Fact vs. fiction on background checks and the gun control debate Fox News

Furthermore, there is no real scientific evidence among criminologists and economists that background checks actually reduce crime. In fact, a 2004 National Academy of Sciences panel concluded that the Brady background checks didn't reduce any type of violent crime. Nor have other later studies found a beneficial effect.

The number of criminals stopped by the checks is also quite small. In 2010, there were over 76,000 initial denials, but only 44 of those were deemed worthy for prosecution and only 13 individuals were convicted. Even those 13 cases don’t tend to be the “dangerous” criminals Obama claims are being stopped.

The delays have other consequences. States that have applied background checks to sales by private individuals have seen around a 20 percent drop in the number of gun shows, eliminating for many poorer people a relatively inexpensive source of buying guns. For gun shows, which usually only last two days, even a three-day delay means that no sale will be made.

Let me repeat the numbers........

The seller cares about getting caught. Registration and mandatory background checks makes getting caught most likely to happen.

All gun sales in the state of Washington will now have to go through a background check. It passed with 60% majority. I voted with the majority.

So now it will be harder for criminals, those with mental problems and domestic abusers to get a gun. They won't be able to do it legally in the state of Washington anymore.

Interesting, when it's put to the vote of the people, background checks passes. Clearly the people of our nation want all gun sales to go through a background check. Too bad that the nra can buy gop politicians to prevent the same law at the federal level.

Lives will be saved in Washington because of this law.

I guess you're unaware that it is already illegal for felons, those with mental problems and domestic abusers to have a gun. So this law does nothing but add another layer of bureaucracy and greater cost to legitimate gun owners. And unless the law also requires 100% registration of firearms, how will anyone be able to know if a gun is transfered without a background check?

Do they have higher gun crime rates than the US? Australia eliminated mass shootings last I checked.

How....please....go through how they are supposed to work....

A felon goes to a drug dealer who sold drugs to a guy in exchange for several guns he stole in order to buy drugs....the drug dealer does not require a back ground check, the felon does not insist on a back ground check....neither one cares that the guns are registered to law abiding citizen, John Smith....

The gun is registered to law abiding John Smith....unfortunately, John Smith's gun was stolen by the drug addict who sold the gun to the drug dealer for drugs, who sold it to the felon who wants to use it to kill or rob someone....

How does knowing John Smith owned that gun help? The police go to a murder site and find John Smiths gun....they go to John Smith...he tells them, yeah, that's my gun...it was stolen....how does that help them solve that crime...... Registration is stupid...and it's only purpose is to be the first step in banning that gun...

I am going to go back to teaching my dog math....there is more hope in that than getting you people to understand how stupid background checks and gun registration is....

Australia eliminated mass shootings last I checked.

No they didn't....they had two since the buy back and the only reason they haven't had more is that no one there has decided to do it....they still have guns....and I am telling you...when they have their next mass shooting, the body count is going to be as high as Norway...why....because no one but police will be able to stop the killer...and it may take the cops a long time to get to the bad guy....or guys....see Terror in the Mall and Terror in Mumbai....if you throw terrorists into the mix....

You ignore how the majority of criminals get their guns. Straw purchasers.

Brain.......it is against the law for a "straw purchaser" to sell or give guns to a felon....it is against the law for a "straw purchaser" to sell or give guns to felons....

Do you get it Brain.....the straw purchaser voided your background check law....he passed the background check....and sold guns to the felons......voiding your precious law....

And guess what, when the straw purchaser gets caught....for selling guns to felons...he will go to prison...because it is against the law to sell guns to felons.....

showing there is no need for background checks....

Gosh and by golly.....Rover...what is two plus two....

This thread isn't about registering guns.

It's about background checks to make sure the wrong people don't get guns.
Logic is hard, apparently. Someone intend on violence isn't going to go to a dealer so his background won't be checked. If he's wacky but with no history he'll pass the background check like now. No life is saved. But we also now have the DoL keeping a database, again, no life saved but a record of who owns what. Registration is an easy next step and we have plenty of examples in other countries how that works. Bloomberg knew how to massage it and isn't stopping there.

And without a background check he goes free when they can't prove he knew the buyer was a felon. Background checks make that impossible.

She will not address any of this in a meaningful way.

Meh, it's one of the most liberal states in the US. No surprise there. Just don't live there and you will be fine.
It's not as liberal as you think. The libs occupy the greater Seattle area for the most part and overwhelm the sane parts of the state with numbers. Our state constitution reads like the 2nd Amendment and it's a shall issue state, which is better than many places. There's no question that is in their cross hairs as well but many moderate libs like their guns too.

Marty, Rabbi, M14...
From your experience in the legal gun business and/or gun ownership, how can guns be reduced in the Black Market?
How do you make illegal sales and possession more illegal, so the people who break the law now will stop?
You understand the absurdity of this, yes?

Here's the thing:
Laws exist not to prevent crime but to punish people after they commit one.
It is impossible to enact a law that will prevent people from breaking the law -- laws cannot prevent people from committing crimes; as such, it is fallacious to restrict the actions of the law abiding in order to prevent people who do not obey the law from breaking the law..
And so, what do you do? Punish people when they commit crimes.
It's hard to decipher your long winded and muddled response...????

Are you saying there is no way to reduce the amount of Guns making it to the black market? Throw up our hands, eliminate the ATF, because YOU see no way of reducing this illegal gun market?

Kind of like, we should just throw in the towel and get rid of the DEA and police because there is just no way to stop or reduce drug crimes... Dealers and users?

These background checks will not stop gang shootings , they will not stop a battered spouse or a spouse batterer from shooting the spouse, it will not stop some messed up kid from shooting up his school. So when the next violent act with a gun happens, another new law will be proposed and possibly passed, them when that law doesn't work, and it won't, them there will be another, and another and another, until they get the total ban that they really want.

Time for me to donate more money to the NRA.
