Study: G-Rated Films More Profitable

By JAMES PRICHARD, Associated Press WriterTue Jun 7, 1:11 AM ET

A study commissioned by a group that encourages the production of family friendly movies found that G-rated movies are more profitable than R-rated films, yet far more of the racier films get made.

The study, released Tuesday by The Dove Foundation, showed that the average G-rated flick was 11 times more profitable than its R-rated counterpart, but the film industry made more than 12 times as many R-rated as G-rated movies from 1989-2003.

The study examined the costs and revenues associated with the 200 most widely distributed films released by major Hollywood studios each year the 15-year period. All the figures used were limited to the first two years of each movie's release.

There were 2,982 films studied. The number was less than 3,000 because some movies were among the top 200 for two years.

Slightly more than half, or 51.4 percent, of the releases received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. The next-most popular ratings category was PG-13 at 28.4 percent, followed by PG at 16.1 percent and G at 4.1 percent.

While the average G-rated movie earned a $79 million profit, the average R-rated film was $6.9 million in the black, the study said.

An average film with a PG rating was more profitable ($28.3 million) than a PG-13-rated one ($23.5 million)....

The public has been sending that message to Hollywood for years, but they haven't got it yet--not surprising for people who live and work in a fantasy world. The few conservatives in Hollywood should band together as a production company and start making quality movies. They would clean up.

It's not that the public WANTS more clean movies... it's that less people can get into rated R movies while G movies are open to everyone. Also, families see G movies, while dates tend to watch pg-13 or R... families usually spend more money at the theatre. I can finally see rated R movies without a guardian and I hope that ALOT of really raunchy movies start coming out! Like Team America. The greatest puppet movie of all time.

Do you have any data to back up that statement, or is that just your take on the subject? If you're into raunchy movies, you know you do have an alternative. You can go around the corner to your local adult bookstore. They will be only too happy to see that your interests are accommodated.

Plus, G movies are purchased as at-home child mollification devices.

You are young. You aren't missing anything. And you are still naive. The fact that G rated movies make three times as much as R rated movies is exactly because the public wants more clean movies. And quite frankly im tired of Hollywood trying to push their immoral agenda on the rest of us. its about time supply and demand caught up with them.

Aren't you the one who made statements like "tits are tits", and something about massaging breasts with your mouth?
I'm not saying that your opinion isn't valuable. But, you are neither an adult nor a parent, so your view just might be slightly limited.

I think this is more likely because there are more parents in this world that do not go to the movies without their children and will not let them watch soft porn barely passing as a mainstream movie.

That's what I'm saying. When I go to R movies with friends I don't see kids in there with their parents. Anyway, to each his own... I like boobs, you like morals.

You can like boobs and still have morals. Ask about any man on this board. You're showing your age.

So? I'd rather not be associated with most older generations... as they have fucked it up for mine. Don't worry though. We are gonna fix it up! Luckily, the bureaucracy CAN be torn down and government CAN be limited

You may be right, the article may be wrong. I think what they were referring to was profitability? :dunno:

Sure there's hope. But not with a smart-ass attitude. You can disagree with me or not. But should you want to direct any of your conversation to me, I'd appreciate some respect.

You're the one that went out of your way to start a pissing contest with me, pulling the worst card in debate... parenthood/age.

Respect is earned. Don't expect me to let you insult me directly without some form of retaliation... here's a rule for you... the golden one.

Nope, just checked with my older brother. I didn't not see it in theater. Thank god. I can now live with myself. :)

Ahh..young grasshopper....how wrong you are in this case.

In some cases, yes - respect is earned.

But when you are 17 or 18 years old, and an "adult" speaks to you - you must give them respect.

You might think they are insane, but they still deserve your respect because they have earned it.

Respect the fact that they are an adult and you just might learn something.

I stated that in no way was your opinion devalued. I merely mentioned that because of your age & lack of experience you may not have quite the same view as those of us who have spent a few more years here. It was not meant to be insulting. Just fact. And you continue to prove my point.

Yes, respect is earned. And even tho' you do not know me or anything about me, I HAVE earned the right to be addressed respectfully. You're trying to run with the big dogs. Be careful.

I see where you are coming from... but in the back of my mind I have the nagging knowledge that Hitler was an adult, and Castro is old as dirt... they haven't earned my respect.

Just you speaking civil to me though makes ALOT of difference, that is a respect-worthy trait.
