About 10 years ago, I travelled for 3 weeks in Spain, solo, with a 15"x14"x4" L.L.Bean backpack. Traveling by bus and train, staying in pensions.

It was spring, so weather was good: I didn't need heavy clothes. Barcelona to Basque Country, to Madrid, down along central Spain to Cordoba and Granada. I didn't have a lot of time left, needed to get back to work, so I checked the difference between bus and air tickets back to Barcelona and found it was just as cheap to fly, so flew back to Barcelona and then home. I had been along the Med coast of Spain, driving all along from France to the Strait of Gibraltar long ago, and had been to Andalusia along the coast another time, so I wasn't missing anything by flying.
