UCF graduation speaker

Video of a speaker at the University of Central Florida’s commencement ceremony this weekend is going viral after she was visibly shocked by the reaction of the graduates to her comments about AI.

UCF, located in Orlando, Florida, has the second-largest public university enrollment in the U.S. and handles its massive graduations by holding a series of separate ceremonies in its on-campus basketball arena, with the graduates divided by colleges. More than 10,000 students graduated from UCF this past Friday and Saturday, according to WESH, Orlando’s NBC affiliate.

At the Friday evening commencement for UCF’s College of Arts and Humanities and Nicholson School of Communication and Media, Gloria Caulfield, President of the Lake Nona Institute and Vice President of Strategic Alliances at Tavistock, was one of the speakers.

While Caufield was discussing technological innovations, she remarked that it was “an understatement” to say we were now “living in a time of profound change.”

“Change is exciting,” she continued. “Very exciting. And let’s face it, change can be daunting. The rise of artificial intelligence is the next Industrial Revolution –”

The graduates began booing and Caufield nervously laughed and looked momentarily confused.

“Whew! What happened?” she asked, turning behind her as the booing increased in volume and one person could be heard yelling, “AI sucks!”

“Okay, I struck a chord. May I finish?”

“Uhh, only a few years ago, AI was not a factor in our lives,” Caulfield said, this time being interrupted by loud cheers and applause from the audience.

Hilarious!

Yea, people don't want AI in our lives, bottom line, but it will be forced upon them just like death and taxes and the democrat party.

I love technology!

Always and forever!

Wow!

Sick screwballs like you get off on this sort of thing.

Fear is the basis of anger. The graduates are afraid. They're facing a dark economy under Trump and those whose jobs are threatened by AI on top of their college debt are scared.

  • Past research suggests that anger relates to approach goals and fear to avoidance goals.

  • We experimentally manipulated the superordinate goals of approach and avoidance.

  • Anger was related to approach only if approach was dominant/aggressive.

  • Fear was related to avoidance only if avoidance was submissive/non-aggressive.

I know of no one who is exited about AI, other than those in government and CEO's.

Yay! Let's take all the jobs and put everyone on welfare!

What could possibly go wrong?
I don't know anyone excited about AI either, but I seem to be one of the few who don't get any more freaked out or concerned about it than so many others do.

It's like the technology version of the climate change fear mongers.

As the climate changes, we adjust accordingly. Same as it is with AI. If you are working a job that is threatened by AI, change jobs! Hopefully, before the polar caps melt and drown us all!

All of the major technical revolutions of the past were expected to cost jobs and bring about great hardships. The invention of the car, heavy machinery in farming, the industrial revolution. One way or another, AI will create employment and eliminate some employment. It's too soon to tell.

But what if there are no other jobs that one can successfully transition to? AI is so broad-sweeping, it can replace jobs in so many fields.

Besides, it's not even about that. I really feel that those at the top, you know the ones who reap all the economic benefit of AI, should share their bounty with the rest of us, so that, you know, we don't starve due to being out of a job.

Smart people will make the most of it. We already have the stupidest ones on welfare.
But I think that this time, it's gonna be different. I agree that the kinds of people who tend to go on welfare tend to be "stupid" ( a harsh but truthful word), however, AI is so smart that I think it will affect even the average people. For example, I am a language learner, and there was this language forum that I used to go to, to ask people questions. But ever since I got an AI chat bot, I have stopped going, because the bot is simply so much faster and better. And those people were really quite intelligent, however, they simply could not compete with AI.

I feel confident that Deep State are fully aware of Muncher concerns and will find ways of reducing their numbers appropriately .

Of what possible use are Munchers once they have nothing productive to do ?
Of course they collectively feel unhappy about this .
A pity . But so what ?

White House Unveils America’s AI Action Plan

The Buffoon In Chief is pushing A.I.

Quit your bitching!

You sound like a damn liberal Democrat!

What happened to your Conservative Republican values of hard work, true grit, being independent and self-sufficient, and pulling yourself up by your bootstraps?

Plus, as you can see in the post above, your dear hero is fully supportive of AI.

There is no stopping AI and if we don't dominate in AI, China or some other country will. AI will cause a lot of upheaval, but it is only a tool just like any other tool when it came about. What matters is how we use AI and better adjust to it as a nation than other nations do if we want to keep our competitive advantage. My advice to students and anyone else is to get ahead of the AI curve and let it make your career better, not worse. If you are smart you will find a way. If you are an idiot, feel free to spend your entire day on the Internet dissing AI to no avail. There's not much money in that though.
