First SNAP Ban on Candy and Soda Set To Become Law

Please continue. You are the best reason I can think of to avoid making charity and heath care government responsibilities.

Democrats, are you following this??
Government rewards and penalizes all sorts of beahvior, depending on what is good for society.

As to what is “good for society,” that is why we have elections.

No. It's not. This is the boilerplate statist view of government. Government isn't there to decide what's "good for society" and force it on the unwilling. It's not there to tell us how to live. It's there to protect our freedom to live the way we want - and otherwise stay out of the way.

Well, the government has decided it’s good to provide food for the poor. Are you saying NO food stamps at all?

That would be preferrable, yes. But if it's forced on us regardless, I see no reason to use it as an excuse for the Republican nanny state.

It’s ironic how the same people insisting that poor people can’t use their benefits to buy “junk food” were the same ones who screamed when states like NY tried to take away their Big Gulps.
How’s that strange? If someone wants to use their money to buy a big gulp why can’t they?

It’s weird the same party that wanted to ban all big gulps doesn’t want to limit welfare funds going to junk food

It’s like you want to keep poor people unhealthy, and unable to work…why is that?

You seem to think poor people are incapable of determine the best choices for themselves and require the government to make decisions for them.

We subsidize a lot things, like coal for example, or farmers. You going to tell them how they can spend it?

Yes I think many are people needing govt assistance via food stamps have made some poor choices. Not all, but many…hence why they came to tax payers for aid for their basic human need

Except the people we are talking about want to buy junk food with other people’s money.

It is not “other people’s money”. We all pay taxes of one sort or another. They have the same right to choose how to spend it as you do with your Social Security check.

You seem to think that welfare recipients are entitled to the same freedom of choice that people who use their OWN money get.
No, I don’t consider people in need of assistance to be a lower class of people entitled to restricted choices. They can budget it as they see fit.

We don’t need to give handouts for candy and soda. It would be a good lesson for a welfare mom to teach her government-dependent children that life is better when you EARN your own money - and then let them shovel sidewalks or mow lawns or whatever to earn spending money.

Wow. You really hate poor people to latch on to so many stereotypes eh?

FYI

In FY 2022, 26 percent of SNAP households had earned income; among households with children, 50 percent had earned income. In addition, 62 percent of households received unearned income from one or more sources (e.g., Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and/or State General Assistance); and 21 percent received no income from earned or unearned sources.

It sounds like they already know how to work and don’t need people butting in telling them they need to learn how to work.

It is their money, like you or I, they have to determine how they will budget it.

So the Gov. signed it...of course..Uncle Sam has to approve the waiver.

Idaho will try to ban a food assistance program from covering candy and soda.

Idaho Gov. Brad Little signed into law House Bill 109, which requires the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare to seek federal approval to exclude candy and soda from foods eligible for coverage by the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.

Idaho’s bill is part of the national movement known as “Make America Healthy Again,” or MAHA, promoted by U.S. health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the bill’s cosponsor Rep. Jordan Redman, R-Coeur d’Alene has told lawmakers.

In a prepared statement, Washington, DC.-based nonprofit Food Research & Action Center SNAP Deputy Director Gina Plata-Nino critiqued SNAP restrictions, saying they “only deepen food insecurity and strip people of their autonomy.”

“This push to restrict what Idaho households can buy is an ill-conceived, recycled attempt to shame people who need food assistance and strip them of their dignity and autonomy when data shows that their diet isn’t much different from anyone else’s,” Plata-Nino told the Idaho Capital Sun.

FWIW - this same argument is happening here:

What libtard source did you quote that from? Nothing about Trump’s goal to reduce antisemitism, and the Arab-infiltrated determination to make it worse?

WTF are you talking about? That's a thread, on this board.

Food stamps should only cover bread, milk and lunch meat. Nothing else, no exceptions.
No fruits or vegetables?

I agree that welfare should only cover nutritious basics, but some of you here are getting a little ridiculous. Kids are gonna get scurvy on some of these diets

Bread, milk and lunch meat will keep someone from starving.

You think these kids are eating fruit and vegetables?

They should be an option.

Limiting it to just lunch meat, bread and milk is just arbitrary and unhealthy

So they should be able to buy alcohol then, right? What happens when they spend too much on booze and then begin to starve to death. You don't think the government will be obligated to feed them?

.

And dope.

I know a man in my town who spends a ton of money on beer and dope, and then bitches when the food bank doesn't give him and his wife enough food.
