First SNAP Ban on Candy and Soda Set To Become Law

Go find a job.
I have a job. Never been on welfare in my life

I’m all for preventing bridge cards etc from being used to buy junk food.

But there’s no earthly reason they can’t use it to buy stuff like produce, peanut butter, rice etc.

Like I said, limiting it to just lunch meat and bread and milk is arbitrary and illogical

If nothing else, lunch meat is processed as hell and terrible for you

I wasn't referring to you.

“Get a job” is fine to say to the adults, but what about their kids?

All I’m saying is lunch meat and bread isn’t a healthy diet. It wouldn’t hurt any tax payers to include a reasonable range of balanced staples

All the people saying “just rice and beans” or “just bread and bologna” are kind of being just as ridiculous as the people who say it’s fine if they use their food stamps to buy crab legs and Pepsi

So they should be able to buy alcohol then, right? What happens when they spend too much on booze and then begin to starve to death. You don't think the government will be obligated to feed them?
Alcohol has never been considered “food” or nutrition AND it is a regulated substance across all classes.

Ok, but the point is we alteady regulate what they can do with "free" money. What if we didn't provide housing but instead provided money for housing but didn't regulate it. They would spend it on drugs and booze and still not have a place to live. We would then be stuck with the added bill for housing.

.

I have worked with the homeless. I've seen women, given safe, stable housing for two years, blow it off and choose to live in the street. I will never understand it.

And when Dems get back in power, your approval won't mean squat. Then they'll be telling you how to live. Won't that be fun?
That's right. Dems are the true American fascists. No need to preach to the choir.

Once again, Idaho leads the nation!
Well..in stigmatizing the poor, anyway~

Gov. Little is sure to sign this.

SNAP benefits—also known as "food stamps"—are administered nationwide to low- and no-income households that would otherwise struggle to purchase groceries. In the 2024 fiscal year, the program served 130,900 Idaho residents, or 7 percent of the state population. But numerous states are considering banning certain purchases from being made using the anti-poverty benefit, Idaho being the first to pass a bill in both chambers.
The passage and potential signing of the bill does not necessarily mean Idaho's SNAP recipients in Idaho will be immediately impacted, as the ban will be subject to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) approval.

No waivers are currently in place in any state that bar SNAP recipients from buying foods based on their nutritional value. However, this could be subject to change under the current Trump administration. Newsweek has contacted the USDA for comment via email.

There is also a push at the federal level to see junk food purchases banned. In January, U.S. Representative Josh Brecheen, a Republican from Oklahoma, introduced the Healthy SNAP Act, which would make soft drinks, candy, ice cream and prepared desserts ineligible from being purchased using SNAP benefits.
If the purpose is to cut government spending, it will work but only if SNAP benefits are cut. But if the purpose is to discourage consuming junk foods it will fail as people will just buy junk foods with their own money.
