Well, i will say you do seem to be willing to see the whole picture. I have to give you credit there. Capitalism drives people to want and get more. That's what it's all about. Both Workers and Business Owners are trying to get more. One is no better than the other. You can't claim the workers are all just 'lazy & greedy' for wanting more for them and their families. But if you are gonna claim that, then at least be honest & consistent. Business Owners are doing the same thing. American Workers don't have too many looking out for them these days. If they don't stand up and fight for themselves, who's gonna do it?
I see the whole picture because I've been both an employee and an employer. Once again, I haven't accused workers of being "lazy and greedy". Some are...most aren't.
Years ago when I got my first job as a manager of a nightclub the owner sat me down and explained how he viewed things in that industry. He told me: "25% of the people you hire will never under any circumstances steal...25% of the people you hire will always steal no matter what you do...and the rest are watching to see how you handle the theft situation. Your job as a manager is to reward the ones that would never steal...fire the ones that always steal and make sure the other 50% understand what you're doing."
That's essentially the same business management model that Jack Welch espoused when he was running GE. He wanted the top 25% rewarded...and the bottom 25% fired. The message sent is that if you do the right things then you will be taken good care of and if you don't you will be looking for a new job.
What you can't seem to grasp, Paul is how valuable a good employee
is. You make the statement that nobody's looking out for them and that's simply not true. Good employees are not only looked after...they are jealously guarded! The workers that are not "looked after" are the not so good employees...the ones that my old boss wanted me to get rid of and Jack Welch wanted fired. THOSE workers don't have anyone looking out for them unless they're in a union.
