You are overthinking it Joe.
I am not going to be outraged if some dickweed from Hollywood completely screws the pooch and ends up in a jam.
Except he was only in a "jam" because a someone went outside the system to get him. That's the thing.
Except people will be less likely to report real crimes because they worry someone will come after them now.Real people suffered real crimes and Jussie did more to throw mud on them than anything else.
If you want to squabble about how harsh he may suffer ... I don't care.
You already have communities that plain old don't trust the police. This prosecution gives them more reason to.
Chicago only cleared 17% of homicides in 2018 because the cops plain old just don't care.
But they turned over every rock to prove Jussie lied about MAGAts beating him up, and when Kim Foxx said she wasn't going to waste more resources prosecuting a marginal offense, they went crying to a retired judge who turned the legal system on its head to get him.
To directly answer your question in regard to firearms ... It's a bad analogy.
I go above and beyond, and pay the extra costs necessary to ensure I am never in violation of the those laws.
I don't think all the precautions I take, or costs I pay, are Constitutional or justified.
You could pay a lot more if someone has it out for you. That's kind of the point I'm trying to get across to you.
Could you mount a million dollar legal defense like Smollett did?
What would you do if they stacked your jury with people who didn't like you?
Now, we do have a remedy for overzealous prosecutors, they are called "elections". Nobody elected this ex-judge or Dan Webb and their "Justice for Hire" effort.
But I get the point you are trying to make.
There are things I don't worry about, and mainly because I accept responsibility for what I do.
In the real world ... There's not a lot of people in a position of power that has influence over me,
that have a problem with anything I do ...
Which is why this should concern you.
Getting back to Ms. Foxx. The reason she got elected in 2016 was her predecessor routinely ignored police misconduct while prosecuting people of color for minor offenses. She ran on a platform of reform and won. She was just as much a target of this investigation as Smollett was, as there was a lot of innuendo before Dan Webb had to admit she was perfectly correct within the law to not prosecute. Of course, he didn't admit this until AFTER the 2020 election and her opponents tried to smear her with it.
