The more likely reality is that atheists have an almost psychotic fear of anything they perceive is trying to 'control' them personally. They fear 'control' while ironically, they fear not being in control over all things in their lives.Religious people are often a certain type of person who wants to be controlled, wants to be promised empty promises. Others can't cope with that.
In contrast, people of faith, especially deep faith, are aware of the immense amount of freedom we have, and embrace ways that open the path to even greater freedom. The irony here is that freedom begins with giving God and His ways first place in one's life. Commandments/Beatitudes are not shackles. Instead, they shake off the shackles that may be present.
Honoring one's parents, for example, opens up an entirely different relationship than a relationship that develops when not honoring them.
