I place this in the religious forum not to conflate Judaism with Israel, though the core principle upon return in 1948: was and remains Judaism of course; but to open the debate to those critics of Israel who will happily embrace say, an Islamic nation in the region. We can't bite our tongue, we have to be honest and fair.
Those who criticize Israel while passively accepting the narrative from their Islamic nations will not acknowledge the critical difference between Judaism compared to Islam, certainly in the influence on government: freedom of expression and ones rights.
It is that simple really. This is not me bashing any other religion, I believe all moderate people of faith are an asset. This is not what Israel is facing in the region, and, it is not what those following the dominant religion in the region adhere too. Can we all at least be honest about this? Israel and Judaism is not the problem some suggest it is. Worse, when they pretend that other nations are somehow benevolent, peaceful actors. Right...
There are always extremists, they exist in Canada and China. They exist among Christians, Jews, Muslims, Atheists, even Buddhists. If a monk burns himself to death in public would we not consider that person (outside of their potential psychological issues) "extreme".
So, the impulsive attackers of Israel and Judaism at least owe us an honest opinion of the differences in the region. No deceit or motivation, just facts. The attack on Oct 7th wasn't just how horrific it was but the main tsrget, young people enjoying their freedom at a festival, not hurting a fly. This realization was perhaps most telling.
If any nation tells half of it's citizens how it can dress or live, that is a problem and a rejection of Western values. No traditional religion on earth promotes the immoderately dressed, however, nations decide laws and they decide what to pursue judicially.
I have watched Piers Morgan speak about a particular "hard right" politician in Israel who was promoting a terror law that seemed to have vastly different punishments based on the religion of the attacker. An Israeli legal scholar said that the law would almost certainly be struck down by Israels courts. See the difference?
Meanwhile other nations, in the region be it Iran or others have no such guardrails. If you are to be imprisoned or even murdered for not wearing a head scarf, no one cares because you dared to upset the authoritarians who are the core of their centralized system.
Again, see the difference?
I have listened to the left, even the far left for the first time and it is clear that their comparisons are extremely biased in their false moral equivalency. Or, traditional conservatives such a Tucker Carlson suggesting he felt free in a Middle Eastern country he was visting that forbids churches and any expression of Christianity with extreme punishments. The guy is not stupid so why would he promote an absurd idea and forward an approach that is vastly inaccurate?
Thus, let us stop with the false moral equivalency are speak plain and honestly. Live and let live, yes. Judaism promotes the light and the nation of Israel seeks to do the same. Their enemies do not. A few well known, wealthy talking heads visiting a country or trying to convince the world otherwise is simply not correct. In some cases, they are wittingly or unwittingly promoting blatant lies.
All faiths are theoretically created equal on a sterile, metric scale. They are vastly different on the qualitative scale.
