obama wanted to use the same tactic he used for the sequester. Maximize the pain.
How much pain comes from shutting down a park?

when did the TP or members of congress get the power to shut down memorials?
Everyone says they want fiscal responsibility and when people makes a stand they are pillaged and Obama shuts down a war memorial which couldn't have cost much to run.
When you shut something down, you shut something down. Some places to shut them down cost money.
Of course you people also closed down research into cancer cures. Your slash, cut and **** policies are simply baseless. I believe we need to cut but not the way you plan tooo.
Republicans wanted their shutdown to look like no big deal. Who needs Government anyway?
Nobody sees people working in a cancer lab. So who cares if they get sent home
But a PARK? Good god. People NEED Parks
Republicans can't tollerate shutting down something people actually see
note to left-wing nutjobs; Obama still found money to go golf with. that isn't essential either
Golf is Not government funded
republicans wanted monuments kept open, they shouldn't have shut down the government. The shutdown was nonessential and wasted $26 billion
ROTFLMFAO.....
Chipping out from the Capitol Hill bunker, President Barack Obama often enjoys getting away from the bustle of Washington politics to enjoy a round a golf–more precisely 146 rounds since he entered office.
His favorite courses are on military bases at Andrews Air Force Base and Fort Belvoir. So when the government shutdown hit Washington–closing grocery stores on military bases including Andrews and Fort Belvoir, barricading national memorials, and threatening football games for the service academies–one could assume that the president’s pastime of choice taking place on federal property is on ice until he and the rest of the folks on the Hill get business squared away.
But you’d be wrong. All “non-essential” personnel have been sent home on the bases while the government’s shut down–and the Chief Executive Golfer’s greens of choice remain open for play.
In fact, since ObamaÂ’s much-maligned sequester hit Washington, the president has teed off for 30 rounds of golf. ThatÂ’s 540 holes, or 120 hours of golf, not including nineteenth hole time.
Left wing nuthuggers ALWAYS lie and get shit wrong!
Vets will never forgive him for this. His followers can spin it any way they like, but the Vets will not forgive & forget on this one. The Dear Leader chose his Illegals' Protest Party over our Vets. Pretty pathetic move.
oh rightwinger is a hyperventilating because everyone isn't buying their lies anymore
Obama SHUT down our government and went out of HIS WAY to hurt not only our vets but you the people by shutting down your, parks and memorial first thing
now vote these progressive pukes out of office from running over us and our lives
MHO - I believe that there is enough waste in government right now that - if eliminated - we COULD operate fully at sequestration levels. But bureaucrats are not going to let that happen. They will not cut the waste, they will cut service instead and hold onto the waste. They WANT us to feel the pain so we will come crawling back to them on our hands and knees begging them to take more of our money.
It is how a bureaucrat protects his/her turf. We need people in those positions who want to serve the people - not who just want to protect their turf.
In this instance, I believe Obama put himself squarely in the corner of the turf-protectors.
No, they have not lost their insurance
They lost their former policy and have been offered one with better coverage
Ummm... Yes, Obama does have the authority to delay those mandates. It is within the powers of the executive branch
Obama did not close down a memorial. He closed ALL Parks as nonessential government functions. Can you defend why a PARK should be an essential function?
Do you have a 2 digit IQ, or what?...Just a hypocrite!
Obama opens National Mall to illegal Aliens!!!
Although WW2 and Viet Nam vets are not allowed to visit their memorials in the National Mall, illegal aliens will get free rein of the place, with the administration calling it a first Amendment right. The only problem with that as non citizens, they do not have the same rights as citizens. Non citizens can sometimes get rights in say a criminal prosecution but not in deportment proceedings, although they do get representation before a judge.
This is a slap in the face to every veteran or any US citizen for that matter, who have been locked out of the nation's treasures for which they are part owners. The illegals will build a stage have amplified equipment, access to TV cameras. This president is playing politics and it's only a matter of time before even his most ardent supporters see through his thinly veiled hatred of everything American.

Do you even know what the Mall is?
It is the open space between the monuments. Shutting down the entire Mall is not practical. Protecting the monuments is
Those "illegals"you made up did not have access to the monuments either. I don't know where you pulled that picture but no way is that the National Mall. Why are you making shit up?
Those vets also had full access to the mall

You are, to paraphrase, the "World's Dumbest Politician' Joe Biden, a F'Kn idiot!...Even your subversive loving NBC has proclaimed he shut down THE MALL and has pictures.... Moron, they call themselves progressives because they have no guts!
"Government Shutdown Closes National Mall, Monuments"
"We have 3,000 permitted events on the Mall every year. While the government is shut down, all of those events have to be canceled, including [the Honor Flight]," Johnson said. "We have a wonderful time with the vets that come and visit. A superintendent comes out and greets them ... but that can't be tomorrow."

Another misleading thread by SG. Obama personally shutdown the monument in the face of visiting vets? No. You don't get to pass blame for this. The shutdown occured due to the actions of the far-right wing of the GOP who apparently control the House. You wanted the shutdown. Own it.
C'mon, JED...you know as well as I do that shutting down of the national monuments was a deliberate strategy of trying to make the government shutdown as painful as possible for the general public. It's what the Federal Government DOES whenever it's budget is threatened and Barry happily went along with it because he thought it would put pressure on the GOP. That strategy backfired on him because it was so obvious a ploy.
Monuments are part of the National Parks System. The entire parks system was shut down as a nonessential government function. In addition to that two acre monument that was shut down, the entire Grand Canyon was shut down
Parks are nonessential
People are essential

LOL That's total bullshit, Winger! It cost more money to bring in barricades to keep people out of an open air memorial than it would have cost to simply keep it open. Or do you think those just magically appeared out of thin air? What cost savings could POSSIBLY been realized by having to erect barricades and have people there to tell visitors that the area was closed? It's a LAWN for Christ's sake! It's not like you need tons of staff to make a lawn work!!! This was nothing more than "theatre" on the Obama Administration's part.

The decision was made on whether Parks are essential or non-essential government services. It was rightfully decided that parks were non-essential
Now, with thousands of parks, monuments and historical sites you expect the Obama administration to be able to decide on two days notice which parks and functions could remain open with minimal impact?
The times I visited the WWII memorial there were always several guards on site. Someone has to chase the kids out of the fountains. Also, a few months prior to the Repulican shutdown, a crazy woman threw green paint on the Lincoln Memorial. We kind of like to protect our monuments from damage.
The decision during the Republican shutdown was Parks Open/Parks Closed. Maybe if Republicans give six months notice before their next shutdown we can do cost benefit analysis on all parks and historic sites to see which are cost effective to keep open

breitbart?
The teap minority in Congress held the GOP hostage.
No other party is responsible.
Mr. Obama called to “reiterate that he won’t negotiate on a government funding bill or debt limit increase,” Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck said.
