As an inland port and industrial center of war production, Manchester and the surrounding area were selected targets for the German Air Force under the Nazis. Not to forget: England declared war on Germany - not Germany did do so. In both world wars.

If I see it the right way then less than 1000 Brits died in this attacks. So what do you really compare? In Dresden had been about a million refugees who you bombed down and it existed not any war production in Dreden and surrounding. It is said about 100,000 people died there in only the most heavy attack of the Brits - most of them had been refugees. I fear indirectly died much more people because the soldiers in the military garrision there had been coordinating streams of refugees.

Incidentally, it is interesting to hear that Goebbels was a commander in the British army. He was never commander of the German army. He was Hitler's Reich Minister of Propaganda. The message "total war" which Goebbels staged in the Sportpalast with his Nazis meant "war is lost".

England and France had a mutual defense pact/treaty with Poland, so once Germany attacked Poland, they were obligated to declare war on German.

The more disturbing aspect is that when the USSR attacked Poland a few weeks later, they did not also declare war on the USSR.

As an Army General, Patton had no authority over either the USAAF or the RAF.

The NATO is a defence alliance. As far as I know 50% of the budget of the NATO pays Germany. The USA is only the most mighty member of this defence alliance. No wonder for a country in the size of a continent. I fear one of the main reasons of the USA to be a member of the NATO is to get control over the other allies of the NATO and to block their military research and innovation power. The USA makes their allies weak. So I think a loss of the USA in the NATO is not really a big problem. The USA will make less money with their weapon industry - other weapon industries will make more money in case the USA will leave the NATO. That's all what will change. Anyway is the USA - since Donald Trump had been president of the USA - no fully trustworthy partner any longer.

NATO is basically a creation of the USA, meant to integrate the military of member nations in co-ordination to block what was Soviet Russia and Warsaw Pact threat of attack upon Western Europe.
Those European members of NATO have done quit a bit of weapons making and marketing on their own, BTW.
