Baden-Württemberg’s Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) has warned of the decline of liberal democracy in Germany. “Populists and those who despise democracy, who only have cheap slogans and empty promises,” fueled fears, did not shy away from lies, and divided society, he criticized in a speech in the US state of Pennsylvania, according to the dpa news agency.
Trust in democratic institutions and processes is dwindling. At the same time, there is a threat from outside, Russian President Vladimir Putin. Democracy can never be taken for granted and must be defended. Germany needs an efficient state and strong political leadership.
