In response, Ms Cheney questions the RNC's criteria for 'legitimate political discourse' by offering this.

Yes, it WAS "political discourse"
However, it was wrong and inappropriate political discourse.

What some Americans seemingly are equating is wrong behavior of one political view justifies wrong behavior by another political view.
That is a dangerous concept.

The riots, damage and injury that occurred during the summer of protest against police brutality and racial injustice was wrong.
Who cannot understand and agree that that was wrong and damaged America and damaged the sincerity of those who feel changes in policing and equality are merited?
But it happened. Regrettably.

But now, to then attemp to use the vandalism of 2020 as giving grace to what happened on January 6th is wrongheaded.

Each damaged America.
In different ways.

2020 hurt a righteous and justified movement. Who wants unwarranted police brutality and cover-ups? Who wants egregiously unequal treatment for any of our minority citizens? A vanishing small number of Americans would want that. So the damage and injury caused by those vandals was corrosive.

But what happened on January 6th was corrosive in a more insidious way. It damaged the signature American ethic of a peaceful transfer of power. It was an angry populist mob threatening how we govern ourselves.
THAT has an effect that speads wider, goes deeper, and lasts longer than the broken windows in an Indianapolis Nike store.

The damage and injury may look similar. A policeman smashed and injured looks quite similar on that Indianapolis street as one does on the steps of the Capitol building. But they are different.

In so many ways.
