The ideals and principles of socialism, along with human solidarity, and civility, the socialist mission and project become that "metaphysical", philosophical, foundation and catalyst for good (i.e. God). If you don't have that ideological framework and foundation (the mission and direction a religion or strong, revolutionary, sociopolitical ideology provides), society collapses into a form of self-centered, hedonistic, sociopathic mass-hysteria (i.e. nihilistic chaos), moral relativism..etc. The vilest, most disgusting, depraved crap becomes "good" and normalized, accepted in society degrading it into a self-destructive, dysfunctional mess (a quagmire-zoo of depravity).

Morality needs a stabilizing element or force, a type of heavy anchor, and that has been a religion for thousands of years. If you don't have a religion (or God/Higher Power), then you at least, need to have a strong purpose fueled by an ideological framework, infused with a revolutionary spirit, that aligns with humanity's natural intuitive, rational, life-affirming morality (natural law - common sense thinking). Without that, society fails. What we are now witnessing in the West is the complete collapse of society. We don't have God and we don't have as a society a strong sense of mission or purpose either. We have nothing, but selfish, nihilistic hedonism, everything is relative, etc.
