I have ridden Acela over its entire length and it only hits it maximum speed of 150 for about 30 miles. It is a case of hurry up and wait as bursts of speed are followed by sections you go 30-40 mph.
The problem is not the trains but the tracks. We did not modernize the tracks, bridges or tunnels and the trains have to slow down. There is also congestion from other traffic on the tracks

It’s not the rails, it’s the beds, banking and number of curves. Also a lot of the bridges and overpasses are in bad shape
