Can the USA ever be United again?

When one reads the various threads on this message board, listens to the media, listens to the rhetoric coming out of DC, it becomes a real concern whether this country has become so divided politically and philosophically that it may not ever be united again.

we have always had different ideas, but we have always been able to find the common ground and go forward as Americans with a common purpose. I do not see that happening today.

Thoughts, comments.

Conservatives don't want a united country. Conservatives want to balkanize America every way they can,

under the banner of their own perverted definition of 'liberty'.

Be honest, the same can be said about liberals. Obama will say it tonight, its my way or I will do it by dictate.

What I find interesting is that even though I see a serious divide in terms of political philosophy, it's not represented in the partisan divide. In my view, the biggest divide among voters is the libertarian/authoritarian divide, and the major parties are just playing a good-cop/bad-cop routine with that. Each one is happy to maintain a pretense of fighting for constitutional limits and civil liberties when they're not in power, and then drop it like hot potato as soon as they are.

No I don't see it happening. Not even with another civil war.

then what is the solution, divide the country? change our sytem of government? hold a constitutional convention? just let it fall apart?

The solution would be to allow states to peacefully secede from the so called "union" if they do not want to participate. But, again, the war of northern aggression solidified the coercive force of the federal government. No state will leave, the country will not divide, the federal government will eventually consume the remainder of of the republic and the states, much like congress will simply be ceremonial in existence.

In other words, nothing will happen except more division, more federal tyranny and ultimately a slow slide into glaring despotism. Thats always how it happens historically.

Things have been pretty much the same, until now. Now the people no longer have the same values, no longer hold the same traditions, no longer celebrate the same holidays or agree on the same national heroes. We are divided on every level.

The younger generation is wishing up. They are running from obamacare. If we can succeed in stopping the socialist agenda we can heal. If not we are doomed and the constitution will die. We conservatives will be a minority to the
a majority that thinks the govt knows better than they do how to run their lives

I don't. I don't want to see America turn into 50 little kingdoms with a nearly irrelevant central government.

Conservatives want states rights so they can roll back human rights.

No.

Never.

Unless dimocraps commit mass suicide. :eusa_dance::eusa_pray:

WORST.PRESIDENT........EVER.

Even worse than Tricky Dick. Or the rapist. Or Truman.

Worst ever.

Biggest reason why? Look at the spread between Patriotic Americans and dimocrap scum... Massive.

The worst part? dimocraps don't care. They just aren't interested.

Just remember something, dimocraps..... Payback's a bitch

Good god, you are such a piece of shit.

Every time conservatives lose an election, they scream tyranny and proclaim the end of the world.

Every time conservatives lose a legislative battle, they are ready to throw the entire system of democracy out the window.

You can't have unity with those kind of people infesting your nation.

Their is more of a Tribal mentality now than I have witnessed 20 or 30 years ago. Reminds me of rival football fanbases where anything the other side does is considered insidious. And while the population in general does not pay much attention, the congressmen and women that have the most outrageous soundbites get the most press giving the public the idea that congress is run by far left or far right ideologues.

How do states rights roll back human rights. States are usually years ahead of govt...especially in the betterment of individuals.

This is why conservatism is the only barrier to unity;

people who are incapable of finding common ground and cause with others because they cannot tolerate the fact that they won't celebrate only the holidays conservatives want to permit them.

Having different political or religious ideologies doesn't mean we're divided, just that we recognize there's usually more than one right way of achieving a goal. Way our government works took this into account ensuring neither side could ever become all powerful and dictate to the other side. Attempts to make this otherwise only ensure the defeat of those who try.

The problem isn't deciding which way to achieve the goal. The problem is that we've lost consensus on what the goal should be. Even if it's just in a general sense, we need to have the same end-game in mind, and we don't.

Not so sure I agree with the idea that we've always had a common ground, and go forward with a common purpose.

Generally, we've had to fight it out.... and fight it out routinely, and constantly, throughout all time.

The very founding of this country, was built on sharp disagreement between people. The loyalists, loyal to the crown of England, fought against the separatists, to the very end. They were shooting each other, and hanging each other, until one side, completely defeated the other.

Similarly, the divide between the North and the South, continued and grew, until it was all out civil war, and people killed each other until one side completely defeated the other.

We've had battles over everything, for ages.

Today's battles will be no different. Forces of evil socialism, and good Capitalism, will fight until one side wins, and the other side loses. Right now, the evil socialists are winning. And perhaps they will secure victory, and doom us to the impoverished hell of the former soviets. And perhaps not.

But regardless, being united is more a myth, than reality. Now you can get 'closer' to being united than we are today. But it means changing some of the fundamentals of our culture.

We would need to have a more unified world view. We'd have to ditch moral relativism, and enact absolutes on right and wrong. Additionally, we would need to have a unified culture. Ditch multi-culturalism, and promote a core American Culture.

I doubt that Americans will be willing to do such a thing, and thus the great division in America will only grow wider.

We live in a plutocracy. And the plutocrats are definitely not divided on their goals, aims and purposes.

It is the rest of us that have a division problem. Some don't want to be governed by plutocrats and some do.

Which side are you all on?

It would take a giant catastrophy to unite us, but socially there is an insuperable gulf. I'm afraid that the good old USA has seen it's best days - I say that with a gut wretching pain; facing overwhelming evidence:
We have elected a socialist as president - two terms :(
The decadence we have plumetted to is outrageous.
Our debt is real, and humongous - it will greatly impede us; cost us immeasurably, and eventually collapse our economy if not attacked.
We have locked up more of our citizens than anyone for victimless crimes, creating a huge sub class of recidivist
We have betrayed our sovereignty, and our laws; giving aid to alien infiltrators at the expense of our citizenry :cuckoo:
We have allowed those in congress to milk us unremittingly; no term limits. :eusa_whistle:
Our government promotes dependancy, and punishes success. :eusa_shhh:

All republics are doomed to failure. The weak overcome the strong; the takers defeat the givers. :eusa_pray:

A good ol dose of Nationalism then?
