When one reads the various threads on this message board, listens to the media, listens to the rhetoric coming out of DC, it becomes a real concern whether this country has become so divided politically and philosophically that it may not ever be united again.
we have always had different ideas, but we have always been able to find the common ground and go forward as Americans with a common purpose. I do not see that happening today.
Thoughts, comments.
Not so sure I agree with the idea that we've always had a common ground, and go forward with a common purpose.
Generally, we've had to fight it out.... and fight it out routinely, and constantly, throughout all time.
The very founding of this country, was built on sharp disagreement between people. The loyalists, loyal to the crown of England, fought against the separatists, to the very end. They were shooting each other, and hanging each other, until one side, completely defeated the other.
Similarly, the divide between the North and the South, continued and grew, until it was all out civil war, and people killed each other until one side completely defeated the other.
We've had battles over everything, for ages.
Today's battles will be no different. Forces of evil socialism, and good Capitalism, will fight until one side wins, and the other side loses. Right now, the evil socialists are winning. And perhaps they will secure victory, and doom us to the impoverished hell of the former soviets. And perhaps not.
But regardless, being united is more a myth, than reality. Now you can get 'closer' to being united than we are today. But it means changing some of the fundamentals of our culture.
We would need to have a more unified world view. We'd have to ditch moral relativism, and enact absolutes on right and wrong. Additionally, we would need to have a unified culture. Ditch multi-culturalism, and promote a core American Culture.
I doubt that Americans will be willing to do such a thing, and thus the great division in America will only grow wider.
