Can the USA ever be United again?

Define compromise. You do know that we all have things that are intractable - does your poll include those?

Does it matter. The GOP decided in January 2009 that they would be intractable on everything. When it came to President Obama...

was that right after Obama told them, here's the plan, get on board or we're doing this without you. we don't need your votes

No actually, it was while he was being inaugurated.

Things have been pretty much the same, until now. Now the people no longer have the same values, no longer hold the same traditions, no longer celebrate the same holidays or agree on the same national heroes. We are divided on every level.

This is why conservatism is the only barrier to unity;

people who are incapable of finding common ground and cause with others because they cannot tolerate the fact that they won't celebrate only the holidays conservatives want to permit them.

Liberalism is just as much of a barrier to unity as conservatism. Liberal unity is everyone should be liberal and have liberal goals and ideals. If that's unity, conservatives should reject such unity where ever it is.

Fuck the GOP - they are culpable for our deterioration as well though the liberals have us on the fast track to destruction. What has Obama been wlling to compromise on? He is an ideologue - he does not depart from his fairness doctrine.

A lot...according to Politifact.

as did the dems for the entire 8 years of Bush 43. its nothing new.

Odd then that all previous filibuster records have been broken under this President.

not odd at all, resisting a president who wants to force marxist collectivism on the country is the right thing to do. We have never had a president this far left. We have never had a president who openly hated the country, its history, and its culture.

but for the record, all of the bills that were fillibustered, were eventually voted on.

Remember the page of notes that was left on a table after the Democrat strategy meeting following the re-election of George Bush? It instructed all Democrats to continue blocking everything the Republicans tried to do! They went berserk when Sean Hannity exposed them for the obstructionist they are!

It's also obvious which political ideology is more prone to favor compromise.

aegiyk_6l0mn_3wsdkxlsa.png

But recent history belies that assumption. Did the dems offer to compromise when they realized that obamacare was failing the american people? did dems offer to compromise of raising the national debt?

the point is that common ground is getting smaller every day and, as someone said earlier, it seems that we no longer have the same end goals for the country.

Compromise becomes very hard when the two sides do not have common goals.

The Heritage Foundation's healthcare plan WAS the compromise. Liberals wanted single payer, Democrats a Public Option...we got Bob Dole's Romneycare.

there was no compromise, a compromise would have required some GOP votes. ACA was passed by dems only, it was their bill, not a compromise bill.

no GOP amendments were allowed to come to a vote by pelosi or reid, no floor debate was allowed. ACA belongs 100% to obama and the dems.

the dems have erased that fact from their memories

When one reads the various threads on this message board, listens to the media, listens to the rhetoric coming out of DC, it becomes a real concern whether this country has become so divided politically and philosophically that it may not ever be united again.

we have always had different ideas, but we have always been able to find the common ground and go forward as Americans with a common purpose. I do not see that happening today.

Thoughts, comments.

Having different political or religious ideologies doesn't mean we're divided, just that we recognize there's usually more than one right way of achieving a goal. Way our government works took this into account ensuring neither side could ever become all powerful and dictate to the other side. Attempts to make this otherwise only ensure the defeat of those who try.

You totally underestimate 'Supreme Leader'.

That's Obama babble. Why don't he take his almighty pen, and sign the Keystone pipeline - we desperately need jobs, not government assistance.
Why are his poll numbers so low - defend that. Is it a right wing conspiracy?

Not so sure I agree with the idea that we've always had a common ground, and go forward with a common purpose.

Generally, we've had to fight it out.... and fight it out routinely, and constantly, throughout all time.

The very founding of this country, was built on sharp disagreement between people. The loyalists, loyal to the crown of England, fought against the separatists, to the very end. They were shooting each other, and hanging each other, until one side, completely defeated the other.

Similarly, the divide between the North and the South, continued and grew, until it was all out civil war, and people killed each other until one side completely defeated the other.

We've had battles over everything, for ages.

Today's battles will be no different. Forces of evil socialism, and good Capitalism, will fight until one side wins, and the other side loses. Right now, the evil socialists are winning. And perhaps they will secure victory, and doom us to the impoverished hell of the former soviets. And perhaps not.

But regardless, being united is more a myth, than reality. Now you can get 'closer' to being united than we are today. But it means changing some of the fundamentals of our culture.

We would need to have a more unified world view. We'd have to ditch moral relativism, and enact absolutes on right and wrong. Additionally, we would need to have a unified culture. Ditch multi-culturalism, and promote a core American Culture.

I doubt that Americans will be willing to do such a thing, and thus the great division in America will only grow wider.

A good ol dose of Nationalism then?

And what the hell is wrong with Nationalism? Nationalism is what holds Nations together, wins wars, unites people!
Liberals demonize Nationalism as some sort of evil! Nationalism must live throughout a society for that society to survive!

It will never happen because America is composed of two main groups of people whose aims are fundamentally opposed to each other: One is the people who work hard and produce something of value for a living, and the other is a hoard of blood sucking ticks.

Why would any hard working American want to be "united" with a blood sucking tick?

Conservatives don't want a united country. Conservatives want to balkanize America every way they can,

under the banner of their own perverted definition of 'liberty'.

That "balkanization" is purely the result of liberal attempts to divide Americans up into different constituencies such as blacks, Hispanics, women, the poor, the rich, corporate CEOs, etc.

However, the real division is between two main groups: people who work for a living, and the blood sucking parasites who live off the labor of others.

As long as there is a significant class of parasites and busy bodies and politicians willing to cater to them, no, we will not be a united people.

I don't even understand the question. Can you tell me when, other than in times of disaster and emergency, this country was ever united the way you think it should be? Is your problem that you bought into the lies that it was different in the good old days?

I have no common ground with a tick. I have no desire to be "united" with one.

The difference is that at no other point in our history have we been so deeply and widely divided with no point on which compromise can be reached.

How would compromise on abortion be reached when on one side the baby dies and on the other side the baby lives? How would compromise be reached on same sex marriage when one side celebrates depravity and other other side rejects it? How would compromise be reached on supporting blood suckers when those who are being bled refuse to bleed?

not at all. the USA has always had differing viewpoints on many issues. But, we were all in agreement that we had the greatest country in history and would do whatever it took to keep it great and strong. Even though we had different religions, cultures, races, and incomes: we were all americans.

Now, there is a contituency that does not like the country, its history, or what it stands for. They want to bring the USA down because they believe in the flawed premise that when one country is successful, others must be made unsuccessful.

The hate-america constituency is mostly liberals and democrats, with obama as their current leader.

We aren't all Americans anymore. Most of the immigrants that have come here in the last 20 years still have their loyalty to their home country. They take the oath of citizenship but it is meaningless. Many do it just to be able to get public benefits.

yep, and therein lies the problem. immigrants used to come to the USA for the opportunity to work and improve their station in life, some still do, but most of the illegals are here to suck the govt teat. Obama and the libs encourage such sucking because they are determined to punish the country for its past successes, wealth, and for the slavery that was ended by a republican president.
