The only thing God created is the heavens and the earth which is allegory for the universe; existence. It's a central belief of monotheism.

Everything else appeared over time as in "let there be." So basically the account is 100% compatible with the universe being created from nothing and then evolving over time which is exactly what science says. The account even got the appearance of light correct.

Does genesis describe the creation of the universe?
