Toney-Finch said 15 of the veterans got the heave-ho from the Crossroads Hotel in Newburgh about 60 miles north of New York City in Orange County — a new epicenter of Big Apple’s migrant crisis since Mayor Eric Adams began bussing Gotham’s overflow there against local officials’ wishes.

The other five displaced veterans were split between two other local facilities — the Super 8 and Hampton Inn & Suites in Middletown, Toney-Finch said.

The Middletown hotels are not believed to have migrants yet, but were reportedly on the city’s shortlist to take some.

First off, these people are immigrants and refugees not “illegals”. People going into New York City as part of a of an immigrant transfer program are not “illegals”. This is just further right wing attempts to dehumanize people.

Perhaps the veterans got the better hotel. Or it was a small enough facilities that they could all stay together, rather than being in another facility that was being used as intake for refugee families.

For people transitioning from street life, the chaos and confusion that the refugee families would bring would hardly be conducive to caring for the Vets needs.

The assumption that this was a hardship or the wrong thing for the veterans, may be misguided.

They have crossed the border in order to claim refugee status, and that makes them refugees. That is the law. They cannot claim refugee status from outside the country, and if your border is closed, there is no legal way for them to come in.

Donald Trump created the mess at the border and then cut all of the courts and immigration services and visa applications and any legal means for anyone to come in from a non-white country. That’s a violation of human rights and your laws.
