I wouldn't say I'm proud since I feel I've won the life lottery. I've been given a great life in a great country but that was an accident of birth, nothing I've earned. The way I view it, being proud or embarrassed is a matter of either personal accomplishment or regret. Those I see as being rightfully proud to be an American are those that took the risk of leaving security of their homeland to become a useful member of our society. Those embarrassed to be Americans, should be for their lack of courage to do as the immigrants just mentioned have done.

I am amused by people who try to claim that "my family came over on da Mayflower!" makes them somehow more American. Talk about missing the point.

For me I am proud of the history of the US, moving from a Republic made by and for wealthy plantation owners, to a Republic for the hoi paloi. Its long struggle and march of rights for slaves, women, and citizens of all color and creed has to respected and applauded. We still have work to do and its been a long road, but we have come far. I'm proud to be an American but not always proud how our leaders run the country, often, their choices are not my choices and I often do not feel that I'm being represented.

The problem with the video is that it was a young woman interviewing other young women! Many young girls today are real head cases. They should put teeth in these interviews--- when the gal says she hates being an American and would gladly live elsewhere, they should have people right there prepared to take her and give her a one way ticket to any country they want on the spot + $1000 to help them get started.

I'd be interested to see how many takers we had. I'd be more interested to see how many want to come back here after staying overseas for a time.
