Democracy has never been a system of government, it is instead an ideal a government must value for a people to be considered free. It includes things like free and fair elections, peaceful transfer of power and above all accountability. When someone says Trump is threatening democracy now you know what they mean.

Greece had the closest thing to democracy as slaves and women were not allowed to vote. The male citizens of Greece studied and debated issues all day long as their slaves took care of them so they could have the time to do so. But it is just like a Leftists to refer to a term that is not achievable, such as the term democracy. It is that utopia that is always a little out of reach, but a reach that needs extended every day to try and achieve the unachievable.

But today, slaves and women are allowed to vote who don't have the time and, instead, are directed to vote via the media and fed talking points as alternate points of view are censored.

This is why democrats love democracy. It is because they have a corrupt system of obtaining votes via propaganda and censorship. This is why at every turn they try to make the system more democratic, much like they changed the Constitution regarding how the Senate is chosen. Once they were appointed by the states and now elected directly by the slaves who are told who to vote for. This reduces the power of the states and adds to the power of the masters of propaganda and censorship.
