Anyone know if James Madison would be a current day liberal or conservative?

He was a federalist who believed in state power, which at the time would have meant literal state powers. I would put him as a statist conservative, either libertarian lite or republican.

Anyone who has been dead for 20 years or more wouldnt recognize the democrat party of today. Modern dems have nothing in common with anyone great from the past. Name any great historical figure, literally ANY (MLK, Kennedy, Lincoln, Edison, Tesla, Gandhi, etc); not a single one of them would vote democrat in 2022. They would think Progressives are fucking crazy.

He would be in prison for wiping out Congress and simultaneously hailed as a national hero.

He would be an actual liberal but that would make him a Republican.
He believed in individual rights, private property & free markets

There are no liberals left in the Democrat party, they are all collectivists & that completely disqualifies them without distorting the meaning of the word beyond recognition

According to Wikipedia, his party was actually opposed to The Federalist Party.

No. James Madison would be a government reformer. He would explain that they did not have the information about the government that we now know, and he would further explain that the checks and balances do not work, because the government is not divided and organized correctly.

The Founding Fathers were all liberal political thinkers. The alternative was the conservative monarchy. Today's liberals are a different breed altogether.

Hell, Dr. King did not vote for Democrats when he was alive.

And JFK was a Conservative Democrat. The Democrats have driven them all out of the party, and probably the last ones were Senators John Glenn and Joe Lieberman. One retired in 1999, and the other left the party in 2006 before he retired in 2013.

But come on now, Gandhi? He was not even a US citizen.

At that time, there was really only one political party. And that was the Democratic-Republicans.

But Madison was not opposed to the Federalists, he was one of the main members of that faction. But do not confuse the Pre-1800 parties with those that came afterwards.

It was actually a coalition party, founded by both Thomas Jefferson and James Madison as they were President and Vice President respectively. The party lasted until 1824 when it splintered after the Adams-Jackson election, and then became two different parties.

The Democratic Party which is still around, and the Whig Party. Which lasted until 1856 when it dissolved after the Fillmore administration over the issue of slavery.. Most of the Northern backers then created the Republican Party.
