If you got rid of the Department of Education, where failed teachers go to make policy, and put public education into the hands of the states, you would find that better performing schools would attract more people to those states, while having pay for performance, the teachers would be excelling. As of right now you have a propaganda machine coming out of the DOEd, spreading Communism/Marxism/Liberalism/Progressivism/Fascism/Socialism to the young impressionable kids, then those kids end up rioting on the streets as we are seeing in this country. Bust up the teachers unions, and soon Greatness will come out of the education system.

I'm not going to pretend that education under Obama was good. We've definitely fallen in recent years, and it needs to be fixed. We need to go back to learning actual content that will benefit the student instead of having liberal ideals and ridiculously complicated engineering math (unless you want to become an engineer.)

But believing Devos is going to to turn things around because she's not a part of the teacher union corruption or whatever is a stretch. Her Charter School plans haven't panned out in Michigan (lots of reports on charters getting worse scores than public schools), and as you have seen from her senate hearing, she has no clue what she's doing. She doesn't seem to understand anything about education unless it pertains to profiting and privatizing

People keep clamoring that she'll put education focus back on teaching students, but from what I've seen, she'll be putting focus on her for-profit program's profits. I feel that parents and students are going to be exploited again for their wallets. Hope I'm wrong.

Who do you think is giving out the stats for charter schools? The Dept of Ed? Really, public schools compared to private schools is like Detroit to Disney World. When teachers are in a union, they will do no more but less than what the contract says, and get no repercussion for their failure knowing that those kids must go because of government truancy laws. When teachers in private schools don't do well, then the whole school loses funding because people take their kids out finding another better school and soon those teachers are replaced and the education starts to rise again. Capitalism is not perfect but does create opportunity and success, as long as people and children use their God given gifts to the best of each ones abilities.

I don't have the numbers but, here in Clark County, NV, a disgusting number of teachers can't pass proficiency tests on the subjects they are supposed to teach.

How does that affect how their students learn?

And how rampant is that across the country.

To me, the single most important step to improve our education system is to ensure teachers know what they are teaching.

(Added) And, what says that teachers must have degrees in education? How many experts are there out there without such degrees who are expert in subjects that can help education our kids?
