Abolish the ‘Undemocratic’ Electoral College?

Then why do you support the electoral college?
Because it's a far better system in a country with a diverse range of values, interests and ways of life than the alternatives, not to mention it's a decent check against the country electing a tyrannical demagogue to run the executive branch just because he/she is able to snooker the masses.

The States are democracies, the Nation is a Constitutional REPUBLIC where one size doesn't fit all.

Such a stupid thread. The EC will never change, small states outnumber large states, so why even discuss it?

Senate Democrats are moving to try to abolish the Electoral College after their party suffered defeats up and down the ballot in November’s elections.

Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee released the S.J. Res. 121 on Dec. 12, which proposes a Constitutional amendment to do away with the Electoral College system altogether and replace it with a simple national popular vote system. Senate Democrats Brian Schatz of Hawaii, Dick Durbin of Illinois and Peter Welch of Vermont sponsored the resolution.

Comment:
The Democrats are cheaters.
They can't win fairly so they want to change the rules.
It would take a constitutional amendment to abolish the electoral college.
That will never happen.
Does this mean the've given up on the state compact thing?

Just an FYI, governor Hochul just came out saying she wants to abolish the Electoral College.

Those damn swing states get all the attention instead of the 3 big states...LOL

I think the States should choose to go back to electors being distributed proportionately, to reflect their citizen's vote, accurately....

My state is one of those states who still has it that way....and it reflects the citizens within the state, which I like and is a better representative of the state and state citizens.

I tend to agree, but you can't force the States to do it without an Amendment.

After the American people REJECTED Democrats and told Democrats to go F themselves and took a giant shit on the Dem candidates, Dems are desperate to RIG elections. It's their only hope.

Snookering a couple of swing states in to voting for them instead of the masses, can be viewed as worse.

That's not how the electoral college check on demagogues was designed to work, the check was designed to operate under the idea of what we would refer to today as "faithless electors".

"The choice of several, to form an intermediate body of electors, will be much less apt to convulse the community with any extraordinary or violent movements, than the choice of one who was himself to be the final object of the public wishes. And as the electors, chosen in each State, are to assemble and vote in the State in which they are chosen, this detached and divided situation will expose them much less to heats and ferments, which might be communicated from them to the people, than if they were all to be convened at one time, in one place." -- Federalist 68

Democrats demote states to a very low status. They elevate the Feds to a super high status.
The reverse would also be true then. The GOP elevates states to a super high status and demotes Americans to a very low status.

FYI
The electoral college ONLY AFFECTS the presidential race, and not any down ballot races, which are won democratically.

---------------

I do not think the electoral college should be eliminated, nor could it be without a constitutional amendment.

But I do believe we should go back to electors distributed proportionately to how their citizens vote for them, and NOT this 'Winner Takes All' elector bulloney!
Your state has the power to do that any time it wants. Maine and Nebraska are not winner-take-all.

Actually that is fundamental to the Constitution. But for states, there would not be a purpose for the Feds.
But for states and their bad behavior in the past, there would not be such a big need for the Feds.

Abolish the undemocratic democrats!

Undemocratic Democrats?

Well, the Republicans have won two out of their four presidential elections since 1990 with less votes than their opponents, AND in the Senate have less votes over three elections (for one full election round) than Democrats since 2002, and yet still manage to win the senate.

Democrats NEVER get the chance to win with less votes than the Republicans.
