Please discuss why the US needs an additional 2-3k data centers.

Does it reduce the property tax of individuals?
Does it help eliminate HB1 employees and their families?
Does it help reduce local power costs?
Is it true it doesn't use water resources from local communities?
Do data centers only hire from local communities and create jobs for the surrounding communities?
How much of our tax dollars goes into building data centers?

Look at the number in Virginia......Gotta keep BIG DATA right next door to BIG GOV.

They are mostly located a couple counties here and they don't do a damn thing to lower property taxes. In fact they have made land so valuable between Dulles and Leesburg folks of modest means can't afford the property taxes, never mind the increased utility costs.

I guess they are a boost to folks 401Ks....Till they aren't.

I agree.

Don't let it go to your head.

Well, I guess we will be thoroughly enriched by thousands more news headlines that that begin "XYZ said eighty seven powerful words that left the crowd stunned" and obvious AI bullshit in our social media, while at the same time companies like META try to fire every Tom, Dick, and Harry to pay on the loans, and then hire Indians to run the reast.

Americans living near a data center in the future.

AI is the death of us. It is stupid. Mother's Day lunch with Mom and the siblings. I had them rolling in the floor laughing, begging me to create a comedy routine. They said, it is a war out there, and I went off. It starts in the morning, two hundred emails to slog through, damn near all junk. Then the phone calls start, it is now two o'clock, I am now at 20 calls since this morning. I mean everywhere you turn someone is wanting to take money out of your pocket.

And this is what gets me. Rather it is cryptocurrency or AI, they all take power. So is not the effort more about consuming and using power than any other benefit? I mean I am not seeing it. What is the benefit to AI? I mean I did the Bitcoin bit, was mining them almost a decade ago. Damn computer built for the purpose running so damn hot that it was not in a case, just in the open and cooled with two box fans. Sat in the corner and hummed generating more cash than any job.

Let's see what Musk is up to now.....Good Lord.

Google in Talks With SpaceX for Suncatcher Orbital Data Center Project

May 12 (Reuters) - Alphabet's Google on Tuesday said it has been in discussions with Elon Musk's SpaceX and others regarding future launches for its Project Suncatcher, an orbital data center project.

Google ‌is pushing the space-based ‌data center idea with Project Suncatcher, a research effort to network solar-powered satellites equipped with its Tensor Processing Units into an orbital AI cloud. The company plans an initial prototype launch with partner Planet Labs around 2027.

A partnership with Google would mark the second time Musk made peace with an AI rival he has publicly criticized, ahead of a widely anticipated and crucial initial public offering for SpaceX.

SpaceX did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The Wall Street Journal had reported the development earlier on Tuesday.

Developing its space-based orbital data centers is one of the major drivers behind SpaceX's IPO plans, as the endeavor is expected to be highly capital intensive and technologically challenging.

Last week, Anthropic agreed to use the full computing power of SpaceX's Colossus 1 facility in Memphis and expressed interest in working with the rocket company to develop multiple gigawatts of space-based orbital data centers.

My son met with Space X and Tesla last week. Actually, it was Monday. Tesla announced the deal with Anthropic the day after. Guess he wasn't convincing enough. What AI needs is power, and initially, they need power from gas turbines. That was my son's in, he PRINTS gas turbines. With at least a two year backlog in turbine production, for Musk's idea to work, that production has to scale significantly. I don't see it happening with Anthropic.

What is the benefit?

It is the lust for knowledge, a lust mankind has had since the Garden of Eden.

And as we all know, knowledge brings power.

Add to that robotics combined with AI and you have the other goal mankind has always wanted, which is free labor.

Mankind has always wrongly believed that what they need is more knowledge and power to cure all their ills, as they scoff at such notions as wisdom being more important.

AI will change the world and we are determined to not be left behind.

Well, I guess one thing it does is promote more nuke power and now Data Centers are providing their own NG fired power plants.

That's US jobs right there but it's sort of self-defeating.......If data centers are sucking all the power the public is still left sucking hind-tit.

What are the magical things AI brings to the normal person raising a family and working 40-50hrs a week other than the fear AI will take their jobs?

I look back at the job I had with Dupont (I basically ran a solvent still) and suspect AI could run it with one person instead of three with the one person being there if something went sideways.

I have to admit I use and enjoy the web access and AI functions so I'm a fan. That said, I wouldn't want to live next to one but VA is big enough to keep us both happy.
