I think this is to be expected when you consider the obstacles native born Americans go through to become an American.

I have owned 2 small businesses, worked for half dozen large companies and I'm now retired. I can honestly say that I can not recall any time that and overbearing federal government was trying to control my life except for their not so kindly request that I attend their little get together in a place called Viet Nam.

I truly believe the overbearing big goverment tale originates in businesses that are getting caught violating environmental, worker safety, consumer protection and IRS laws and and regulations. They put big bucks into the republican party and candidates that will work in their best interest which of course may not necessary be in the best interest of the public.

What small government really means is eliminating regulatory agencies so big oil can drill anywhere they please, large manufacturing companies will not have be concerned with worker safety and environment problems, and consumer safety will mean buyers beware.

After all of this, will the financial size of big goverment be significantly smaller? Of course not. All the welfare programs, healthcare programs, retirement programs, and defense programs will exist because the people both republicans and democrats want and depend on them.

The US Working class had a heydey because the rest of the world blasted itself to rubble after WWII. Once they rebuilt, we were too lazy and complacent to compete.
