They don't defend themselves. We have troops in their countries to provide for their defense. We should close all our bases at once. The US should not be garrison'd in NATO country bases.

Not very many, even in Germany (largest US foreign presence). The US military personnel that are in most NATO countries are there for logistical and technical purposes, and are usually housed in bases owned by the country itself. Most of them are not frontline combat personnel either.

The countries that have stationed a large number of US frontline combat personnel, with maybe the exception of the Baltic States, are perfectly capable of defending their own borders without them.

The nations that benefit from NATO the most are the Eastern European states which border Russia, and NATO exists to deter Russian expansion in that region. Those Eastern European states have the most trouble paying 2% of GDP on defense, but are also the most willing. It's also worth noting that in the event of a war with Russia, their saviors would be Western European nations like France, Italy, and Germany. None of which pay 2% of GDP on defense.
