Trump announces sweeping budget agreement

"President Donald Trump announced the White House and congressional leaders clinched a sweeping fiscal deal to lift the nation’s debt limit and dramatically raise federal spending levels.
The agreement, negotiated by Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, is expected to clear both chambers before the August recess — alleviating pressure ahead of a slew of high-stakes fiscal deadlines this fall.
"This was a real compromise in order to give another big victory to our Great Military and Vets!" Trump tweeted."

"Under the deal, the Pentagon’s budget would increase to $738 billion next fiscal year — a $22 billion increase that is just short of Trump’s demands but above House Democrats' proposal, according to multiple sources.
It would also increase nondefense spending to $632 billion — a $27 billion increase that marks a victory for Democrats, though the money will also have to cover extra Census costs as well as a shortfall in Veterans Affairs funding.
Congressional leaders want to pass the two-year deal before departing for a five-week recess at the end of the week, which means a vote as soon as this week in the House — if Trump gives his final blessing. The Senate is in session for another week.
The agreement would eliminate the threat of dual fiscal crises that have long been hanging over Washington — an unprecedented default on U.S. debt and massive across-the-board spending cuts that could paralyze key agencies."

That sound you hear is Mick Mulvaney breaking furniture in his office.

Trump announces sweeping budget agreement

What would you have preferred? A protracted fight, a default just around the corner every other week, nothing getting done, and businesses seeking cover in the face of the ever impending crash?

Now they even agreed to pay the census workers, though you can bet Trump inquired about possible ways to stiff them.

Whatever, I'd say $50bn is a lot of money, but still a small price to pay to avoid months of acrimony and dysfunction.

Well, I'd have preferred to roll back the Trump tax cuts...so that revenue would have increased along with spending..but i guess that's a bit unrealistic. This is the best we can do..but still..one day---shyte like this is going to come back to haunt our grand-children.

Wow.......................the Republicans fought Obama every time there was a budget deadline because they didn't like all the spending.

Now that Trump's in office? They don't really care how much they spend.

Concur. Still, I am glad this one is over, and the imbecilic debt ceiling is over and done with until after the election. That alone is good news. It will be unpacked, of course, in case a Democrat works in the Oval Office.

That’s priceless. Deficits do not matter to anyone unless it’s campaign fodder to harangue the opposition. Fiscal conservatism has gone the way of the passenger pigeon...

"Fiscal conservatism" has been dead since Reagan, at least. Where have you been?

Hadn’t you heard, President Trump was going to eliminate the debt...

Well, then what in the hell were the tea baggers bitching about when Obama took office?

Nope. All I heard was Trump proposing to follow his own business principles, and to pay back just cents on the dollar. That's what you heard?

More debt, terrific

Well, then what in the hell were the tea baggers bitching about when Obama took office?

They were bitching about Bush venturing to save the banking system he let loose until they crashed the financial system, and federal dollars ending up in Those people's pockets. They operated with a concept of federal governance not significantly different from that of 1776. You didn't really think they and their spluttering apoplexy had anything to do with the political and societal requirements of the 21st century, did you?
