Racism would not be a factor in Africa, and it's the biggest factor in the US.

Do you understand how cotton played the same role in the 18th and 19th centuries that oil plays today? You might also consider the role slaves played in the Electoral College and its usefulness to cotton's control of the White House for the first hundred years of this Republic.Other than picking cotton, slaves had no significant impact on capitalism.

"There are vast differences in wealth across racial groups in the United States. The wealth gap between white and black families nearly tripled from $85,000 in 1984 to $236,500 in 2009."That would only be true if race was a determining factor in class ... Which isn't the case in America.
What does that have to do with the role slavery played in establishing capitalism as the dominant economic system in the US?It was the folks in Washington that freed the slaves then kept them out of Congress when elected ... Not some plantation owner in the Deep South.
Centuries of US slavery followed by another hundred years of Jim Crow have left scars unaffected by fifty years of "integration." If it's true that US capitalism is no longer capable of providing good paying jobs for all who seek them, then the mass incarceration and demonization of blacks might lead to Sowell's race war.georgephillip what is your point?
I understand how slavery indirectly affects some black Americans today, but many black Americans have no direct link to slavery except the knowledge that Africans were slaves. I understand most all Americans today have never experienced a Jim crow Law. I also understand poverty and hopelessness. What I don't fully understand your interpretation of 'demonization' of blacks.

Can you name any subdivisions falsely classified as racial that could account for the wealth gap between whites and blacks nearly tripling from 1984 to 2009?The are differences across many factors ... And subdivisions that can be falsely classified as being race driven.

Why don't you explain what you meant by "(o)ther than picking cotton, slaves had no significant impact on capitalism"?

It has everything to do with how African-Americans were viewed by establishment politicians in Washington. They didn't deny Pinchback his seat in Congress due to capitalism ... They denied him his seat because he was an African-American.
Your premise regarding race is screwed up when you apply facts over your own bigotry.
.
Prove it.
"The racial gap in median income has closed slightly over the last 20 years. Nonwhite families earned about half of what white families earned in 1989. This closed to 70 percent in 2007 and slipped back to 65 percent in 2010. But the gap in assets runs much wider. White families claim about six times the net worth of non-white families, a gap that has changed little over the past generation."
