My theory is the religious extremism (absent in all other western nations) that exists in the midwest and southern states fosters a culture of ignorance and poor education standards.

This clashes with the educated and more travelled and world wise americans living in the remaining regions.

But I stand to be corrected and I would like to hear what you all think.

Because of the societal breakdown in morals and the slap in the face to GOD being replaced by atheistic Evolutionary debauchery for the last 55 years downward spiral... Plain and fucking simple is that more on your level or would you like a more colorful metaphor????

Americans are great at pulling together when we need to as we have in the past, the only thing that all American’s have in common is individualism. Because of that it seems like we have a hard time on agreeing about anything, until the chips are down. Even lefties like me supported attacks on Afghanistan and the ousting of the Taliban after 9/11. There was a real time there that all American’s were united and it was nice to see.

Thing is, America is full of individuals who hate being told what to do, if you tell us to look right, we look left or vice versa. I think it just comes from having so damn much of everything (money, land, cars, etc.) that makes us all into bickering siblings more often than not.

And I think that impression that Americans are divided has been responsible for the toppling of more dictators in the 20th century than any other misconception. The Taliban were actually dumb enough to think the left in America would protect them when harboring Osama?

That’s where I think it’s hard for Europeans to understand Americans because WW2 kind of nailed the lid on the Coffin of nationalism, but in America it’s still alive and well on both sides of the aisle because, well, we are just the best and we all (left and right) know it.

The US most divided? You must know little about world politics.

Heck, you are in the UK, where your northern portion has an active separatist party, and where terrorists were bombing London not many years ago to get the British out of Northern Ireland.

Check out Belgium, where the Flems and the Walloons always seem on the verge of breaking up.

Or Spain, where the Basques and the Catalans want to break away from Madrid.

Or Italy, where the north thinks little of the south.

Or Canada, where a Quebec separatist party is the third largest political party by seats in Parliament in the country.

Toro is right. America is not more or less divided than any other western country. However, America's divisions are much more visible.

For example, when was the last time the BBC News website had around 25% of its home page dedicated to coverage of elections in Spain, or France, or Germany, for weeks on end?

Another reason is that, more than with any other country, everyone has an opinion about America. As such, they pay more attention to the goings on in America.

Finally, the "goings-on" go on in English, which is a language many in the west understand. If America's dominant language was Italian, for example, I bet people in England would find it a lot less compulsive viewing.
