The so-called founding fathers had a vision, it's called "liberty". It has little or nothing to do with morals or virtues, as we refer to them today. "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" came from the Declaration of Independence but never made it into the U.S. Constitution. While realizing the morals and virtues were an innate part of the "common man", the founding fathers always stressed "liberty."
