Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. – maker of the Black Hawk helicopter – has announced the elimination of 570 jobs, becoming the most recent defense contractor to announce financial struggles amid tightened defense spending and the potential for drastic cutbacks in January.

The Pentagon plans to cut $487 billion from its budget over the next decade, but contractors and lawmakers alike are alarmed about a separate wave of cuts that could begin Jan. 2 unless Congress and the White House team up to avert them.

Northrop Grumman recently announced it was cutting 600 aerospace jobs. And the announcements come as House Republicans renew their calls for the Obama administration to reveal the full impact of the next wave of scheduled defense cuts. They're concerned specifically about guidance from the Labor Department over the summer that federal contractors would not have to give 60-days notice of mass layoffs despite a federal law that says companies facing such circumstances should.

The projected $500 billion in additional Pentagon cuts would be the result of so-called sequestration – the automatic spending reductions for the military and other areas that take effect because Congress failed to agree on a deficit-reduction plan this summer.

Whats to explain. He promised to end the war and he is and the cost goes down. You think we should continue war spending because of jobs? Halliburton and Blackwater is fraud and abuse but we would continue the war for them? Remember when the military bases were closed to cut cost? Jobs will be lost so what? They will go on to other areas of empoyment. Thousand of troops were unemployed because the wars are ending. Kiling people is good for the economy?

Do you realize how many of our soldiers leave the service and can't find jobs?? Do you know how many veterans are homeless now because they can't find jobs when they get out? What is our government doing to help these people? I know....the same thing he's doing to help the everyday citizens in this country find jobs...........NOTHING!

Say it again and again. You can find three examples here today where rethugs claim that the guvmiont DOES NOT create jobs. But now, all a sudden, the hated guvmint cuts back and there are jobs lost.

Are you aware that the U.S. spends 41% of the world's total defense expenditures? We spend $711 billion annually on defense. That's 5 times what the #2 country (China) spends on defense. How do you consider that sustainable, in the long term? Particularly when we have a 1.6 trillion deficit?

Would it work in your house to keep spending money you didn't have as your debt continued to expand exponentially?

How about cutting all these entitlements .. You know in Norway they did a study. They had if you got laid off you could stay on unemployment for 4 years. Guess what almost everyone used that 4 years. They cut it down to two years . Guess what almost everyone found a job in two years.. If you are going to keep giving people free crap ( well free to them) they have no incentive to go out and find a job. just look on youtube and put on Obama free money and you will see the craziness in that ... I understand there are people that cant work but the numbers that are going on food stamps and Social security disability these days are record numbers. WHY??? Because it is much easier to get these days, They just spent 99 weeks on unemployment why go back to work if you can find more free money.. I have told this board over and over again my own flesh and blood has done this so you cant say it doesn't happen.

We have too many entitlements , Yes some people need them but they need to make it not so easy and there should be cut off times for welfare , food stamps medicaid. It can be 3 to 5 years after that you are on your own . Sorry. You cant say after 5 years you cant get a job and if you have a baby after 5 years they will be in school. Dont have any more children if your on assistance so you cant use that defense..

You know what? You sounded reasonable till the end. In case you missed it; Obama did not put the sequestration in place. You rethugs in Congress put this together. The Dems offered cuts in social programs, the rethugs offered defense cuts.

And btw, what countries that hate us are capable of attacking and defeating us? Even with the cuts. Just curious on that one. Or are you just concerned that some military contractor will miss his bonus check if the cuts happen?
