Black Hawk maker cuts jobs as contractors, lawmakers fret over defense cuts

Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. – maker of the Black Hawk helicopter – has announced the elimination of 570 jobs, becoming the most recent defense contractor to announce financial struggles amid tightened defense spending and the potential for drastic cutbacks in January.

The Pentagon plans to cut $487 billion from its budget over the next decade, but contractors and lawmakers alike are alarmed about a separate wave of cuts that could begin Jan. 2 unless Congress and the White House team up to avert them.

Northrop Grumman recently announced it was cutting 600 aerospace jobs. And the announcements come as House Republicans renew their calls for the Obama administration to reveal the full impact of the next wave of scheduled defense cuts. They're concerned specifically about guidance from the Labor Department over the summer that federal contractors would not have to give 60-days notice of mass layoffs despite a federal law that says companies facing such circumstances should.

The projected $500 billion in additional Pentagon cuts would be the result of so-called sequestration – the automatic spending reductions for the military and other areas that take effect because Congress failed to agree on a deficit-reduction plan this summer.

It's going to be difficult, if not impossible, to balance the budget if we don't cut back on defense spending.

Are you aware that the U.S. spends 41% of the world's total defense expenditures? We spend $711 billion annually on defense. That's 5 times what the #2 country (China) spends on defense. How do you consider that sustainable, in the longterm? Particularly when we have a 1.6 trillion deficit?

Would it work in your house to keep spending money you didn't have as your debt continued to expand exponentially?

Not one senator, representative, or staffer was laid off. Not one vacation cancelled, not one insurance premium pitched in on, and not one offer to take a pay cut. Yet they all look at Obama and say, this is your fault. Apparantly our elected officials need their inflated salaries and pensions more than out military. This isn't a one man show.

We actually spend closer to $1 trillion on defense expenses. I don't believe the $711 billion includes funding for Homeland Security or veteran's benefits. This is one of the biggest issues with making cuts in spending. Everybody agrees we need them, but everyone wants someone else's program cut and not their own, and that includes the righties who are demanding the largest amount of cuts. They have taken defense off the table for cuts, and in fact are promoting increases in spending.

Hospital/clinics are laying off here.

More than 100 people in our small community.

Cut the defense budget in HALF. Get these parasites off the government payroll. Use the money saved for things that benefit America - not warmongering.

So, you favor Keynesian economic policy, stimulus spending etc.

Because most people are concerned about the national debt.

Our Navy is so big, you could fit the next seven navies inside it.

The f-35 alone accounts 1 trillion of our 16 trillion dollar deficit.

Like checks to American Indians on reservations who do nothing all day like you? What was it $2,000 a month that you get?

Whats to explain. He promised to end the war and he is and the cost goes down. You think we should continue war spending because of jobs? Halliburton and Blackwater is fraud and abuse but we would continue the war for them? Remember when the military bases were closed to cut cost? Jobs will be lost so what? They will go on to other areas of empoyment. Thousand of troops were unemployed because the wars are ending. Kiling people is good for the economy?

Way to avoid my comment so I must be in the ballpark.

Gee, are you offended that I didn't respond to your racist personal attack?

It wasn't a racist attack at all. You said that's what you are and you also did not refute the amount the other night when someone else said it. In fact you argued back without any denial in the least.

But be that as it may. I don't give a shit. You're an idiot either way.

If Private enterprise not Gov't is responsible for employment why would Republicans be opposed to cuts in the Defense Budget -

because private enterprise really has no real role in (hiring) Defense Projects but is involved so people like Mitt Romney are able to make money off of other people simply trying to make a living.

Stop giving to the military, we all know private citizens can run it better. The Government can't even run the post office how are they going to run the top military in the world? Privatize the military before it is too late.

Do you realize how many of our soldiers leave the service and can't find jobs?? Do you know how many veterans are homeless now because they can't find jobs when they get out? What is our government doing to help these people? I know....the same thing he's doing to help the everyday citizens in this country find jobs...........NOTHING!
