Surgical Air Strikes will not do the job. B52 carpet bombing of ISIS logistics, HQ, etc in Syria will start to take them down. Those who survive the strikes will learn to fear the power of the USA.

It's not the whole story though. The VC were afraid of the B-52s, but as the song says, "they're still there, he's all gone". Just being the toughest SOB on the block, isn't enough. You've got to get the people to fight for their own freedom. We didn't do that well enough in Viet Nam and Bush hadn't learned the lesson when invading Iraq.

seems to me that b52 carpet bombing would have been good when 'is' was still in columns in the desert as I heard was reported a few weeks / month or so ago . I was thinking WARTHOGS and other stuff on 'is' columns in the desert and destruction of 'is' like was done to saddams army back in 92 [think it was] .

Which people are slaves and need to stand up and fight ISIS ?

If you're that far out of the loop, read a few news articles and then come back and post. Give us a break! It's not like you're a noob. :cool-45:

Carpet bombing and smart weapons aside, I think ISIS is going to have a difficult time sustaining its momentum now that every State is aligning against them. The only reason the Taliban was able to conquer Afghanistan was because it was being armed and financed by Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, while Iran and Russia were funding their opponents.

This time, all the big and small players (US, Russia, Iran, Syria, etc.) are united in their opposition to ISIS. Without a steady, reliable supply of arms and cash, ISIS can only sustain itself by capturing revenue-generating resources or weapons depots.

Once again you're not very quick on the uptake, you didn't "get" anything. You asked a dumb question and in keeping with your lack of sophistication, don't seem to recognize sarcasm when you see it, Sheldon.

Well I get that this quote was a joke---- I don't think arming the Yazidis is going to help much.

Are the Yazidis the only group? That's why say you're not very quick. Grabbing low hanging fruit and pretending one group represents everyone is just intellectual laziness and I don't have time for it.

Surgical strikes?

A blast from the past comes to mind : Osirak Nuclear Reactor.

Surgical strikes have their place too ladies and gents! not all the time...... but now and then!:)

ok carry on

Obviously besides the time, you also don't have the answers. All other groups seem to be fighting back quite nicely.

This isn't 50 years ago, carpet bombing against a dispersed target like ISIS would be silly. An F-15E with four 2000lb JDAMs will do more damage to ISIS logistics, HQ, etc. than a B-52 carpet bombing with 80 500lb dumb bombs.

One of the reasons air power did no prevail in Nam was because we keep agreeing to cease fires and halting the bombing which gave the VC time to rest, regroup, and rearm. When you have your enemy on their heels it's never a good idea to call a time and let them recover.
