WASHINGTON — A 7-year-old Guatemalan girl who died in the custody of U.S. Customs and Border Protection waited an hour and a half before receiving emergency medical care after showing symptoms, officials said Friday.
Jakelin Amei Rosmery Caal Maquin
Jakelin Amei Rosmery Caal Maquin, whose name was confirmed by CBP and the Guatemalan Embassy Friday afternoon, was apprehended with her father after crossing the border illegally into New Mexico with her family and more than 160 other migrants. Medical personnel are not staffed in the remote area where they were held, known as Antelope Wells, the officials said.
Very sad, apparently you had not eaten or had water several days before the Border Patrol had picked the group up. She was also transported to a hospital after Border Patrol had revived her once.
I can’t figure out why parents would risk their children’s lives. Something I don’t understand.

Helping a little kid like that should always go without question, however, I'm sure the reason she didnt get the medical help she needed was because as mentioned she WAS in a remote location. Thats not the fault of the border enforcement, rather its the fault and risk that her parents took in bringing her to a remote location!
if they had evaded the border patrol she would have probably died as well. It's too bad. Question also could be, if she was sick, why didnt her parents stop in Mexico to have her taken care of?

Well, the article also says she did get a helicopter ride to the hospital and was given treatment. Unfortunatly she probably died because the adults who were with her didnt give her water for a couple days.
People seeking asylum are supposed to go through a point of entry legaly, not try to sneak their little kids across a desert. If your looking for problems with procedure, start there.

Sad that the parents had to put their children through unwanted situations. Like to try to illegally cross the border. Instead of not helping their country be great, but it's sad. Shouldn't have happened if the parents decided to be great and go back home.
