Misunderestimating Middle America

I haven't said mine is better than yours.

All I've said is that I think that slavery is wrong. The bible certainly doesn't. What's your opinion on slavery?

That's not quite true. You made a pretty big claim on morality. You said:
Christians are free to think whatever they want, to say whatever they want, but they are not free to impose their beliefs on others.

And, to be honest, the bible doesn't exactly have the most enlightened opinions on things. Not only is homosexuality not accepted, but slavery is.

Sometimes its necessary to have a higher moral standard than the bible.

By this statement, you implied that there is a "higher moral standard" than the Bible. The Bible of course is the standard for the Christian conscience.

And then you said the source of your "higher moral standard" is your conscience.

I am very interested why you think you have a "higher" moral authority than Christians since we ALL have consciences. Can you tell us why your conscience is so much superior to Christian conscience?

Combined "moral authority" or not, village or no village, it still does not explain why their "moral standard" is any "higher" than the combined "moral authority" of Christians.

I know that and you know that as do many others on this board...however I am also sure that no one in here will convince Mr.ACLU of that! ;)

If you take all the morality from the bible, then add together a general disgust with slavery, then you have a higher moral standard than the bible. It's that simple.

You can also be disgusted with other things in the bible, such as the killing of firstborn Egyptian sons who did not commit the crime for which they were punished.

Your ridiculous claims have no meaning for me anymore.

You haven't proved yet why your conscience is any better than mine.

Just because you claim your modern, atheistic version of morality is a new, improved version does not make it so.

It's that simple.

Fine. You want morals?

If you're only doing what's right to go to heaven, to get a reward, then you're selfish, and you aren't moral at all.

If someone else does what's right because it's the RIGHT THING TO DO, and not because he'll get some reward, then he's morally superior to you.

It really is a shame that you can't understand that killing and stealing are wrong, without some book telling you so.

That's a totally different issue. There are plenty of Christians who do the right thing because
1) they fear God and want to make it to heaven (a normal human "selfish" reason)
AND
2) they also know they are doing the RIGHT THING
You'd probably be amazingly surprised how "evolved" most Christians are. Your put-down attitude reveals your ignorant bias.

It's really a shame that liberals can't understand that killing babies is NOT RIGHT, yet they still push it, even though so many, many women suffer the after-effects within their consciences for the rest of their lives. Maybe they should have read The Book before they made their CHOICE, so that their CHOICE was a truly informed one. The Book is the distilled wisdom of many ages. Abortion is certainly not a modern invention. Although modern atheism has certainly taken it to new heights of destruction.

Was that an intentional pun? I thought (fundamentalist) Christians don't believe in "evolution."

I'm sorry, but is your abortion rant directed at me?

If you think that slavery is not wrong, then yes.

You all must have some serious inferiority complex if you think someone saying "slavery is bad" is lecturing you and acting morally superior.

i wasn't speaking of anything in particular, i was simply asking you a question about your behaviour.

everyone know slavery is wrong.....can't say the same thing for christianity or any other religion for that matter.

I don't have a problem claiming moral superiority over a book that condones slavery. Is that the answer you were looking for?

I don't look for particular answers...convicted people that know everything and lecture other people on what the should believe intrigue me....anyway my apologize I must have misunderstood you, you seemed to be claiming moral superiority over other people for their opinions about Christianity…

I'm claiming there are higher moral guides than "the book."

interesting .... living to the standards set in "the book" is pretty difficult.... what moral and ethical code is higher?

Well, what if you took the same standards, and then said "slavery is wrong," wouldn't that be better?

Sorry, I really can't continue this anymore today, I have more important things to do.
