One problem is that this 14 year-old girl searching sex through the "Hot or Not?" app.

And the next, the young man's sentence is a true miscarriage of justice. The criminalization of the resultant act and the destruction of this young man's future is the true crime. This kid got sex offender status for making a judge sadface about kids these days.

How long the judges will be allowed to screw up people as they want?
No, the problem is he didn't ask for id. Fuck em
And what if she has fake ID?

Then he was still having sex with a minor.

Coulda gotten married here in Missouri at 19 and 14 and has perfectly legal married sex.

People need to quit obsessing on whether or not someone's a 'minor.' Minors can have sex in many states. It's just so variable. 16-18 generally, but when close in age exemptions exists this would have been legal in some states, just not apparently this one.

In almost half the states it is acceptable to use the defense that the girl misrepresented her age.

Depending on what she looks like, that should be a valid defense.

Mistaken age isn't a defense here. Dunno about elsewhere. But in this instance she did in fact misrepresent herself 'formally' online as well. Would sue the app for not verifying ages. In effect assisting in the commision of a sex crime allowing minors to use the site which is for sexual purposes.

How about taking some time to get to know a girl before you have sex with her. You know, meet her parents and shit? That would have solved a lot of problems here.

He was tryna fuck...who the hell going to meet the parents after finding a skank on a sex app?

Computer science student Zach Anderson, 19, met a girl, 17, on the "Hot or Not?" app. He was from Elkhart, Indiana. She was 20 minutes over the border in Niles, Michigan. They hooked up. Once.

But it turned out the girl was really 14. She'd lied to Anderson and also in her profile. Now Zach sits in a Michigan jail, serving 90 days. When he gets out he will be on the Sex Offender Registry for 25 years...

In this excellent South Bend Tribune article, the mom told a reporter that she didn’t just ask the judge for leniency, "we asked him to drop the case."...

Now, in addition to registering as a sex offender, Anderson will spend five years on probation, during which time he will not be allowed to live in a home where there is internet access or a smart phone. He will obviously have to change his major. And he is forbidden to talk to anyone under age 17, except his brothers....

So, a 19 yr old, naive KID has sex with a 14 yr old girl who lied about her age, and his life is now ruined. That's justice?

An adult had sex with a 14 year old child. That she lied does not make her any less a child. That is statutory rape under Michigan law. There is no question he did it and he could have gotten up to 2 years in prison for it. He didn't get prison. So I'd say that's justice served.

The girl is 14-makes her a freshman in High School - shesh - doesn't make any difference whether she misrepresented herself as older while scanning porn or dating sites, and BTW, what in the heck would suing the website accomplish? That has nothing to do with the act. The Boy? 19, either graduated HS, or about to start college. He is an adult - no excuse. If anybody should have been charged as an accessory - it is the parents - for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Guy is darn lucky he didn't get major jail time - the prison garbage in there won't make any distinction between raping a minor, and statutory rape - they ain't lawyers..............

The reason many rapes are not reported, is that girls don't want to be exposed to the scrutiny of the defense, attempting to blame them for being, acting, enticing men into sex they don't want, simply because they are provocative. Gawd gave men enough blood to run two parts of the body, but not at the same time - the brain, and you know what. Sick of the women being portrayed as at fault for these acts. She is a minor - her parents are responsible for keeping her in school until she is 18; protecting her; providing a home and keeping her off of porno computer sites. End of story. At 19, the guy isn't naive, just stupid - he knows where to locate women of legal age for sex, and it sure wouldn't be on the internet. Too risky. Was money exchanged for this? Because anybody can punch up an escort site and be pretty confident the women they hired is going to be age 18 - they don't hire minor's...........

So what's your solution? Give a 19 year old a pass for having sex with a 14 year old because she looks old for her age?

How about taking some time to get to know a girl before you have sex with her. You know, meet her parents and shit? That would have solved a lot of problems here.
Easy for you to say since any woman you'd ever "bed" would have a mother that had been dead for 50 years or so.

How about holding the girl responsible for her deception? How about the judge not going nuts when the family of the girl agreed that the boy shouldn't be prosecuted? And how many dates should your gov't require before two consenting adults (as the girl portrayed herself) are allowed to decide to have sex?

I would say five dates. Any girl who gives it up on the first date is nothing but trouble.

Sex with minors is illegal, they are children, incapable by law, of making adult decisions. That's why we have laws to protect them from themselves and their own stupidity. Adults are solely responsible for making sure their decisions regarding sex matters are not illegal - that is the only thing of importance here. Ya think a 19-year old, probably recently graduated HS boy doesn't know what a 14-year old freshman looks like, no matter where he happened to discover her? Surfing the internet for sex, and he can't spot a minor, dump as a rock. He got off easy, and so did her the girl's parents who should be prosecuted for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, not advocating on behalf of a boy who just had sex with their minor daughter. I think this is where sex offender laws are murky - neither is an adult. Sex offender registeries should be for the truly henious criminals only - pedophiles (and this is not a pedophile); violent rapes, serial offenders. Things like statuatory rape- which I think this is - don't belong on an offender registry. It's way wrong imo.

That's what's XXXX-up.........

If you can tell just by looking people wouldnt check ID's to verify age.

Male Teen Has Consensual Sex with Female Teen. He Gets 25 Years as Sex Offender Banned from Internet. - Hit Run Reason.com

Teens cannot have consensual sex. The prison term is justified and legal. Think about how the girl's father and mother feel about a boy violating their precious daughter.
