The elephants come from two sources. One story is that it was a logo on their luggage. They identified them with that.
The other story is that a coach had his second string start the game. It got close at halftime and he sent out the first string. A sports writer of the day said they looked looking like elephants.
As for the tide, the way they swarmed the field was said to look like a Crimson Tide.
