Well, that would be pretty stupid, seeing as how those states make up a third of the electoral votes (118), and about a quarter of the population of the US (76,812,052)

Right, but what if he only wins the deep blue states? that wont be enough in 2012 as the states he turned Blue,have flipped back to Red. All those crucial swing states are not happy with Obama,and I dont see Obama winning any state in the traditional red west and southeast.

Obama is not a shoe in. An election can turn on a dime. Today's hero is tomorrow's villain. Suppose the Bin Laden raid was a disaster and all US troops were lost of captured by the terrorists. The Republicans would fry Obama's ass as a total incompetent just as was done with Cartier. Even if you are well ahead, you have to campaign because things can go against you very fast.

Whenever a candidate appears to be ahead of the pack, money flows in from supporters. It seems everybody wants a big piece of the winner. Contributions must either be spent on the campaign or given away. So no matter what, you end up with a big expensive campaign.
