I am middle aged. During my life I’ve heard of everything and then some as “causes of the cultural demise” or increasing violence, or whatever. Let me outline some of them.

Single parent homes
Violence in movies and TV.

Wrong religion

Let me go on record as saying Pfui. Everyone has a theory, and every theory might touch on a few points, but rarely covers all of the points of even one event, much less a majority of them.

One of the better ideas I heard was the idea of a unified moral lesson through the child’s life. The idea that the message was reinforced in year after year at school, and home. That some things were right, and some were wrong, would be taught to the children from the earliest years. But there is one glaring problem. We can’t agree amongst ourselves what is right, or wrong. Oh, we might agree that murder is bad, and rape is a terrible thing. But try and get any twenty people to agree what rape is, and chances are the resulting argument will turn ugly in about five minutes or less.

Sex Education was going to increase teenaged promiscuousness. As if Teenagers needed lessons on how to do that. People were doing that long before sex education was taught. It may have reduced the spread of STD’s. Then again, maybe not.

One thing I have noticed is this. We are all absolutely certain that we know how to make the world better, and it inevitably involves everyone else acting like we imagine we do. In other words. If you all were more like me, then we wouldn’t have these problems.
