Does self awareness come from atoms and molecules?

Youre reading this, so you believe you're self aware. Is that merely a by product of chemistry?

Maybe this belongs in Religion and Ethics? What else would it be the product of, if not chemistry?

So a carbon atom knows that it's different from other carbon atoms?

No, that is not what it means at all. But, to put it in perspective, gold, granite, oxygen, water, and a turd are all made of atoms & molecules. Are they the same? The parts of our brain that use energy to store data are made of atoms & molecules. Batteries are too. But having those molecules does not make a battery.

So a computer, which uses energy and stores data, is self aware?

Anyone reading this is aware; it is not a question of belief. In fact, consciousness is the one and only thing about which there can be no question as to existing. We do not believe that we 'are'. Anything else may be belief, but the capacity to believe is from consciousness, the basis for all else. The perceptions that consciousness processes are totally subjective and interior phenomena. The stimulus of those perceptions can be doubted and debated. The consciousness at the core cannot.
Where that consciousness comes from cannot be established just now, and may never be. To say it comes from atoms is no more provable than to say it is projected by beings in another dimension. There is, indeed, even speculation that consciousness does not emerge from the universe, but quite the contrary.

we ate an apple from the tree of knowledge = self awareness

:D
Incorrect. It was not knowledge that was the fruit, it was duality. It was the tree of the 'knowledge' of good and evil. This is a wonderful metaphor, and very in keeping with oriental thought/philosophy. The universe, that was one, was split in two. That error, that 'Manichaeism', keeps us in separation, interpreted understandably as sin.
