CA meter maids paid nearly $100,000 a year

What I found odd is that they have 10 people for 1.3 sq miles. Do the meter maids ever walk more than a block?

Guess you don't know much about staffing and distributing labor hours. I don't know the actual schedule they use, but let's say they have people on duty from 7 am to 9 pm Mon-Fri, and 8 am to 11 pm on Sat and Sun. Two people start first thing in the morning, and leave after 8.5 hours (3:30pm on weekdays, 4:30 pm on weekends). The second pair comes in at 12:30 pm on weekdays, and 2:30 pm on weekends. The small window of overlap allows the extra manpower to hit the peak of the middle of the day rush, and a smooth shift change transition. This is a total of four workers each day, most of the day only being covered by two people, and requiring a total of 10 full time employees working 40 hrs a week. Sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Funny how when someone gawks at some wall street crook (I mean executive) making 5 million a year they are told "none of your business so what." WHen some city worker makes $67,000 the same people cry out how that is way too much. Talk about class warfare. Another example of hatred toward working people. Pure unadulterated hatred. If I could make $67,000 a year reading meters then heck why wouldnt I try to get that job? What they should make is $5,000 plus should pay the extra that the wealthy are going to get as a tax break right? I see where you're coming from.

Right, like when execs of failing companies gets golden parachutes and conservatives defend them telling us we are just practicing class warfare.

You are a fucking idiot of the highest order....................

It was Obumble that hired the wall street execs ..it was this admin that insisted the wall street crooks get bonuses.

Fuck you are stupid, beyond the normal political discourse.

Especially since the metered area is very small in a city that's very small anyway. The areas that have meters are on Pier Avenue and along the beach. Much of the residential areas are driveways and red zones. Land is way too expensive and limited to waste on such things as lawns and backyards. The homes have very small patios and very large rooftop decks.

The may be overpaid in Hermosa Beach but Im a fan of "Parking Wars" and those people in Philly and Detroit deal with a lot of shit.

That was the first thing I thought.....

Talk about an easy job.... What do they do sit in lawn chairs all day watching a bunch of parking meters - none the less for a 100k a year??

In what universe are meter maids around 24-7???

Besides, even if there were only 4, that would mean they each cover 1320 feet ... A quarter mile?? really??

Oh what a tough job - never mind the fact that anyone could do it....

At the beach they do. They sit on the Esplanade in a chair watching the meters. When the section are either ticketed or have a lot of time, they move on down the Esplanade. At the Pier, they just wait in a coffee shop or bistro.

They do the same thing in Redondo and Manhattan. Although there are so many laws in Manhattan Beach, they can also give out tickets for playing ball, running, etc.

That is pretty much what I envisioned...

Yeah I read about that - giving people tickets for having a good time playing ball... Of course those same nuts who made those laws then turn around and claim people are fat because they're not active enough....

This is obozonomics. Give all govt workers twice what they're worth. Socialist Obozo thinks govt work is the highest calling.

poorrichards blog: Hermosa Beach meter maids making nearly $100K?

August 10th, 2012, 9:01 pm When contemplating the many reasons cities in California and elsewhere are venturing closer to bankruptcy, look no further than the relatively lucrative and often-unjustifiable salaries bestowed on municipal employees – and the lofty pension benefits attached to the high pay.

One of the latest examples comes from the California coastal city of Hermosa Beach, where some community service staffers who collect money from parking meters and manage their operations – positions once widely known as “meter maids” – are making nearly $100,000 a year in total compensation, according to city documents.

There are 10 parking enforcement employees for the 1.3-square-mile beach city southwest of downtown Los Angeles, and they pull down some disproportionate compensation, considering their job functions. In fact, the two highest-earning employees for fiscal year 2011-12 are estimated to have made more than $92,000 and $93,000, respectively, according to city documents provided by Patrick “Kit” Bobko, one of five council members and who also serves as mayor pro tem. Those two have supervisory roles. The other eight parking-enforcement employees make from $67,367 to $84,267 in total compensation.

I'd imagine you can barely get by with 70k- 80k a year in a place like Hermosa Beach. That area is one of the most expensive areas to live in the entire country.

That being said who gives a fuck? Sounds like a local issue to me.

Why are you asking such an irrelevant question?

Besides, even if there were only 4, that would mean they each cover 1320 feet ... A quarter mile?? really??

That seems like a reasonable beat for a person on foot to cover, taking time to write citations, etc. What's your problem?

What does that have to do with anything, other than the fact that you're clearly jealous that they make more money than you do. If you want to make more money, go find a job where you can earn it. These meter readers generate over $200k in revenue a year for the city, by going out there and issuing parking citations. Maybe if you could grow a competency gland, you'd be able to do something similar for someone, and convince them to turn around and pay you a nice salary in return.

You would not get by making 70 or 80K a year in Hermosa Beach, you can drive through the city for that much but not to live there. Rents average 15k a MONTH. It's the place where attorneys and doctors roommate up to have a beach address.

It is a very bad example to give of a depressed area where $100,000 a year is overpaying a meter maid.

Oh really? I'd do that job for 40k a year and I'm more than qualified to do it...

I'm not jealous - I'm pissed that democrats know absolutely NOTHING about free markets or the idea of supply and demand...

The only jealous and greedy fucks are those in unions.. Those peons expect a million dollars a year to do remedial work like shovel shit..... Of course democrats give them whatever the fuck their demands are.....

Anyone can do what these simpleton fucks do, so it what universe are they any more special than the idiot who works at McDonalds? why is one worth 100k a year and the other 25k a year????

The only fucking reason why these useless peons make the money they do is because they want to keep their cushy pay so they vote democrat.... And democrats being the massive retards they are have no economic understanding so they throw money at these simpletons because they know if they do it will keep them in power - fuck the economy all they care about is power because they all believe they're right and the people are wrong.

Why don't you go fuck a tree and allow intelligent people to run this country for once...

Private sector businesses will not hire new employees if they know they're stuck footing the bill for a bunch of pricey public sector workers..... Just about everyone knows this except for the brain dead progressives who struggle with basic logic...

So thank you for perpetuating the demise of the United States with your economic ignorance...

Meter maids in Hermosa Beach do not walk, they drive the 5 feet or so between cars and meters. Neither are they "maids" but mostly men who work in parking enforcement. Because there is so little to enforce and the costs are so high, Hermosa Beach is considering outsourcing parking enforcement to a company that won't have to pay city benefits as well as high salaries.

Then that's your stupidity for underselling yourself for what you could have gotten for it the job. And you propose to tell the rest of us about markets and supply and demand? :lmao:

Here's the funny thing. The city might end up saving on costs. But is it going to pass along any of that savings to those using the parking? Or back to the people in any form whatsoever? Oh Hells no.....

No, the'll spend the money on something else. They'll refurbish the Hermosa Beach Playhouse for the umpteeth time. The residents of Hermosa Beach don't want to pass savings along to people using the parking. Residents get permits, they'd like to keep everyone else out of the city to begin with. They are like the people of Manhattan Beach who passed all their silly laws specifically to keep people from outside the city using the beaches and parks in the city. The people who live in Hermosa Beach don't even like the people who live in Redondo Beach. They'd quadruple parking fines if they thought they would get away with it.

These cities are so insular, every one of them, that they'd put up walls manned by armed guards if they could. In Redondo Beach, Riviera Village right near the ocean uses identification to give resident discounts to people who live there. Now they won't ask for identification, but if you just happen to flash out your driver's license with a local address you only pay 50%.

Are you fucking retarded?

Why you think you pay 3 bucks for a gallon of milk? why the fuck do you think you pay 2 dollars for a loaf of shelf bread??

Now what the fuck do you think would happen if milk was 6 dollars a gallon and bread was 4 bucks a loaf??

What would the economic ramifications be? especially when the average salary was 40k?

Do you understand yet or is what I'm telling you too difficult to understand?

You do realize there are economic laws - they're very similar to the laws of gravity and other laws of physics... In short - you progressive believe or want to see a toddler and a 6 foot 9 MLB pitcher throw the ball at the same velocity and if you cant make that happen you will rig the radar gun to make it appear they do on record despite the fact those who saw what occurred call bullshit...

Sorry if my metaphor is too complicated for you to understand...

People are upset because they see people being paid too much money at the taxpayers' expense only because their public employees union pays off politicians. If Microsoft was paying janitors $100k, no one would complain.

There aren't any meter readers making $100k. The OP was a LIE. Why perpetrate it?

Because that is a big part of their schtick. Remember Obama's trip to India costing 200 million a day....they bought that hook line and sinker.
thats part of nobody's schtick Bo.....Democratic Congress people as well as Issa and Co. have been saying in the hearings going on right now that Postal People make 90k a year.....thats bullshit and they know it.....

Now you have a clue as to why the public is turning against public service unions. This is one of the reasons.

Because they are kind of stupid?

Instead of being mad at the plutocrats who stole the middle class from them, they are angry at the people who didn't go along with the gag.

It's kind of like an arsonist burns down your house, and instead of wanting to put him in jail, you want him to burn down your neighbor's house, too.

Insane.
