But...I thought solar energy was pure, and clean and filled with puppies and rainbows...

Here we have the problem.......not only does it not work as well as coal, natural gas, oil and nuclear...it is also just as dirty....

A Clean Energy’s Dirty Little Secret

A new study by Environmental Progress (EP) warns that toxic waste from used solar panels now poses a global environmental threat. The Berkeley-based group found that solar panels create 300 times more toxic waste per unit of energy than nuclear-power plants. Discarded solar panels, which contain dangerous elements such as lead, chromium, and cadmium, are piling up around the world, and there’s been little done to mitigate their potential danger to the environment. “We talk a lot about the dangers of nuclear waste, but that waste is carefully monitored, regulated, and disposed of,” says Michael Shellenberger, founder of Environmental Progress, a non-profit that advocates for the use of nuclear energy.

“But we had no idea there would be so many panels — an enormous amount — that could cause this much ecological damage.” Solar panels are considered a form of toxic, hazardous electronic or “e-waste,” and according to EP researchers Jemin Desai and Mark Nelson, scavengers in developing countries like India and China often “burn the e-waste in order to salvage the valuable copper wires for resale.

Since this process requires burning off plastic, the resulting smoke contains toxic fumes that are carcinogenic and teratogenic (birth defect-causing) when inhaled.”

You are entitled to your opinion sweetheart.

However, your opinion was that Hillary the Hag would win the election so your credibility sux.

The largest component of nuclear waste - spent nuclear fuel can be reprocessed. The US of A just chooses not to. We are the only ones: France, China, Japan, Russia.
It can be reprocessed but most will still be waste, the most highly toxic of all wastes.

The amount of waste is reduced, the radioactivity generated by the waste is reduced, the radioactive decay half-life of the waste is reduced, and the product is re-used.

You prefer not reprocessing spent nuclear fuel?
I am not saying not to reprocess the fuel, but to think it rids the world of waste is incorrect. And I am not sure what product is produced by reprocessing, other then plutonium which we all know what that is used for.

Now, if the reactor is a breeder reactor then reprocessing does make sense.

Here is a link to a group that isn't exactly nuclear friendly:

Nuclear Reprocessing: Dangerous, Dirty, and Expensive

I never said t rids the world of waste? Did somebody else say that?
link please?

In addition to plutonium which is used as nuclear fuel, there are also minor actinides, useful radionuclides, noble metals, and reprocessed uranium.

Somebody better stop Europe (France), Russia, China, and Japan as they are routinely preforming the task.

A flawed study, with flawed assumptions.

Are we headed for a solar waste crisis?

To make these calculations, EP estimated the total number of operational solar panels in 2016 and assumed they would all be retired in 25 years — the average lifespan of a solar panel. EP then estimated the total amount of spent nuclear fuel assemblies that would be generated over a 25 year period. EP then divided both estimates by the quantity of electricity they produced to come up with the waste per unit of energy measure.

Almost all the present panels on the market are guaranteed to retain over 80% of their generating capacity for 25 years. So, are you going to throw away a panel that is still operating at 80%+ of it's original capacity simply because the guarantee period is up? And solar panels are actually a smaller problem than the other electronics that end up in the landfills.

Another idiot talking point for the 'Conservative' knownothings.
