FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — Officials say one person is dead and three others are wounded following an early morning shooting at Northern Arizona University

School public relations director Cindy Brown says the suspected shooter is in custody.

She says the first police call about the gunfire came in at 1:20 a.m. PDT Friday.

The shooting occurred in a parking lot outside Mountainview Hall dormitory at the northeast side of the Flagstgaff campus.

Brown says she doesn't know what caused the shooting and also didn't have any details about the suspect and victims, their conditions and whether they are students.

No other details were immediately available.

I never see that as a deterrent... it doesn't prevent the crime and no perp thinks about a longer sentence, or even the death penalty when they are committing a crime....

I am not against longer sentences, but I do NOT believe for one nanosecond that the Perp cares about them or they come in to equation when they are committing crimes, the perp doesn't think he'll get caught....

So there has to be something else we can do? Is it idle hands? Put more people to work and less crime type of thing?

The difference is Arizona has open carry laws while Chicago gets guns from Indiana.

If Indiana cracked down on their gun dealers there wouldn't be so many in Chicago. But they won't.

One of my best friends moved from NYC to the Phoenix area last year for work opportunities and no longer goes out to clubs at night. They have open carry in the bars. He told me that there are daily news stories about people shooting at each other on the highways due to road rage and open carry, and they never make the national news.

So I would feel safer in Chicago, knowing which parts of the city to avoid, than I would in the whole state of Arizona.
