One of my best friends moved from NYC to the Phoenix area last year for work opportunities and no longer goes out to clubs at night. They have open carry in the bars. He told me that there are daily news stories about people shooting at each other on the highways due to road rage and open carry, and they never make the national news.
So I would feel safer in Chicago, knowing which parts of the city to avoid, than I would in the whole state of Arizona.
When I moved to the suburbs of New Orleans, I quickly learned not to make eye contact with anyone while in a car. It is a good way to get your head blown off.
In fact, back in the early 1960's I was hitchhiking to college, and a guy picked me up in a VW. They were underpowered, and the guy took offense when someone tried to pass him. He pulled a gun and waved it out the window at the would be passer. i couldn't wait to get out of that car.
