Margarine has been around for a long time. My mom told us how during the Depression they were too poor to eat butter, so they ate lard with yellow food coloring: the first margarine. When I was growing up, we couldn't afford butter either: we had it 4 times a year--Christmas, New Years, Easter and Thanksgiving. The rest of the time it was margarine.
