Anthem Blue Cross customers got a shock this week when the health insurer informed thousands of individual policyholders that their premium rates will jump as much as 39 percent on March 1.

"There aren't any other parts of our society where people have no regard for inflation rate and increase their prices this much. I can't imagine anything in the world that's going up 39 percent," said Josh Libresco, 54, of San Rafael, as he grappled with the news that his family premium will go from $858 per month to $1,192 - and that's with a $5,000 deductible.

Thank goodness my job offers an HMO option for my daughter and I, or I wouldn't be able to afford insurance.

It really is amazing how close to bankruptcy so many people are.

Stop stealing 1/3rd of our paycheck to pay for your pet programs and we would be in alot better shape.

So Avatar, what are your thoughts of Blue Cross raising their premiums that high? Just another "day at the office?" Do you think it's "fair?" I know I am tired of my paycheck going DOWN every single year, because my insurance rates go up every year, even with an HMO.
But I pay it, and use it when my daughter or I get sick, so I'm happy to have that option even though it costs so much money.

I think if government gets out of the insurance industry you would see prices a lot cheaper.

However, I dont think anyone is entitled to anything in this world except life and liberty. Everything else has to be earned through hard work. Sometimes we have to sacrifice the things we want for the things that are vital. There are risks in life. It's just something we have to live with.

Tort Reform and interstate competition will do far more to drive the prices down than anything the current administration or people such as Zona will ever do.

Maybe some competition would convince them to bring down their rates

Oh...I forgot....That would be SOCIALISM

People like Avatar just don't get it. There is nothing out there to stop them from raising it to ANYTHING they want. ANYTHING.

I don't understand him being happy with this. He represents so many republicans because they actually have him believing this is a good thing.

Yes...up until the point where he can no longer afford his own insurance

At that point, his fellow republicans would say he didn't plan well.

Then purchase a policy with a different company that's cheaper. Problem solved.

If you have a pre existing condition, you cant. Problem just starting.....not solved.

my state only has Anthem and one other insurer that insures 88% of the people with health insurance...we have a Duopoly here...both insurers can keep their prices high due to it....

Also, most people get their insurance through their employer who offers only ONE insurance company to cover them....employees have to go with their company plan(s) in order to get their employer to pay the 60%-70% of the cost, as most employers do....most people would NOT be able to afford to go to another insurance company on an individual insurance policy on their own... I priced Anthem last year, for an individual policy for Matt and me, was $25,ooo with a $5k deductible.
