Singapore spends 3.3% of it's GDP on education, whereas America spends 4.9%. They have possibly the best education system in the world.

Coincidence or a model for good education? Is it time for the USA to bring back good old fashioned ass whoopins and suspensions?

Nice to see Slovenia kick our asses! Atta way to go, Dims! Three cheers for your Common Core!

Not sure there's a correlation. There are more factors involved than just punishment in school. It starts at home. A desire to learn is another. Making it interesting/challenging is another.

Well the whoopins thing is out for sure these days. Suspensions? Many of those don’t want to be in school in the first place so their punishment turns out to be a gift.

I imagine a great deal of the success of what’s going on in Singapore’s educational endeavors has to do with the attitude of the students themselves. They come to school to take advantage of the educational opportunities afforded them which is instilled in them at home by their families. You come to school wanting to succeed and willing to do the work needed to do so.

Not a lot of that kind of dedication to the cause in many of our schools though, especially inner city. And all the money in the world won’t change it. It comes from within, at home. Or should.
